Gillibrand has a 100% progressive record on corporate subsidies and labor rights
...and 97.14% on government checks on corporate power.

I see people calling her a pro-big business DINO, but that's hardly the case.

1. Check out what this blog says
http://culturekitchen.com/liza/blog/paterson_to_choose_congresswoman_kirsten_gillibran

<<<She is what I call a right-wingish Democrat for her opposition to gun-control. It's because of her support of the NRA that Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy has vowed to primary Gillibrand in 2010 if Paterson appoints her to the Senate. >>>

<<<The irony is that Paterson may be swinging from the nation's most prominent Democratic family to one with strong Republican ties. Gillibrand's father, Doug Rutnik, is an Albany insider and lobbyist whose ties to former GOP powerhouses Joe Bruno, George Pataki and Al D'Amato are legendary.>>>

I hope she's progressive but this doesn't look that good.

2. Gun control is a non-issue. SCOTUS took care of that.
So, people have to find a better reason than that.

7. Yeah, and Ari Fleischer came from a family of Democrats.
How many DUers have conservative parents, eh?

http://www.ontheissues.org/NY/Kirsten_Gillibrand.htm

She's a pro-gun liberal Democrat who's friendly to rural causes.

11. Lifelong Republican Carolyn McCarthy, you mean?
Edited on Fri Jan-23-09 12:11 PM by benEzra

LIFELONG REPUBLICAN Carolyn McCarthy, you mean?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolyn_McCarthy

She doesn't give a crap if the Dems suffer another 1994 in 2010 over idiotic rifle bans; she just wants the most popular guns in America banned, and damn the repercussions.

She doesn't care; gun control is what she's all about. Not surprising, perhaps, given the tragedy in her family, but calling Gillibrand (with an 8% conservative rating and a 100% rating from the ACLU) a "right winger" because she doesn't share the corporatist/DLC obsession with banning popular guns, is ludicrous.

6. She's not, unless you consider stronger immigration restrictions.
Not at all surprising coming from a rural farming district.

She's also pro-gay-rights, coming out of the most Republican district in New York.

What the fuck is Paterson thinking?

Of course, both she and Paterson will be history next go-around, thank God.

13. Blue Dogs are always corporate. just because she hasn't voted pro-corporate in one term doesn't mean
she'll continue.

Blue Dogs are still Blue Dogs and will always sell out.....

21. That's not necessarily true
Some of the blue dogs are economically progressive but more socially conservative. Many of them represent poor rural or small town districts and thus are more conservative on guns and abortion and gay rights but have good voting records on business/labor issues.

14. She's anti-gun control and pro Bush tax cuts until she pulls a Mitt Romney
I'm sure she'll make a huge turn to the left within the week because she's a political opportunist.

16. She has the same position on gun control as Howard Dean
Hell even Obama ran an ad featuring a lifetime NRA member endorsing member and openly saying that he supports the 2nd Amendment. He also seemed to support the DC v. Heller decision from his statement on it.

We need to get over that issue.

Edited on Fri Jan-23-09 12:29 PM by ClarkUSA
If she is anti-gun control as NY Senator, she'll go down in flames in 2010. But she won't. She'll pull a Mitt Romney. Bet on it.
Political opportunists always do.
