32. It should be Howard Dean.
He was able to face down an incredible political machine and enforce rules that had been agreed (no matter how people saw the consequences of that).

If he can stand up to that machine - he can stand up to everything that will be thrown at him and the President by the Insurance companies.

He will still remain as a senior advisor, hopefully. His Senate contacts and background make him invaluable to the effort

Daschle "was bringing Obama down" because of people like you and Rush Limbaugh. Now, that's bipartisanship of a kind I
will never applaud. But keep congratulating yourself. Hope you feel virtuous now.

Daschle's tax issue was a distraction that you, Republicans and the corporate media pursued. Nice job.

Repukes were all for him, btw.

I saw many interviews these past few days with Senate Republicans. All of them were harping on this as
much as you and enjoying every minute of it. Kinda like you.

79. Daschle himslef opened this door, and gave the media the ammo.
Those in high level positions had better keep their noses clean. You want to look past it because they are Dems?

It doesn't work that way. Every person in Obama's administration will be looked over with a fine toothed comb. If there are any problems, they should know they will become magnified to the point of becoming a distraction. He brought it on himself and on Obama. I am glad to see him go, because now, he is no longer a distraction.

You should know me better than that. I never said Daschle didn't do anything wrong. I just think he should have still been confirmed.
He paid up with penalties like Geithner, and Geithner got confirmed.

Oh well, chalk another one up for the corporate media wins another one, with an able assist from wingnuts and Democratic circular

47. While I personally would be happy to see Dr. Dean get the nod, I'm not sure
it's going to happen.

The good doctor did such a good job of saving the Democratic Party and challenging Repubs in places that we hadn't contended in years (i.e. McConnell's seat that he almost lost in Kentucky), the Republicans could start this drama-rama all over again.

I'm not suggesting that we cave to that. It's just that after this Daschle debackle, Obama might opt for someone who was not the architect of sending so many Republicans home and avoiding another cable news piss and moan sesssion by the cry baby GOP.

We shall see, though. If he does choose Dean, I'll be happy!

Now that would be a clever move. Utah's governor would replace Hatch with someone who is less reactionary than Senator Hatch, he or she might even vote with progressives once in a blue moon!

Now that would be yet another example of smart bi-partisan politics!

46. It's Interesting That Daschle Is Using The Repugs Attacking Him.....
as part of his justification to step down. If you looked at the sentiment here on DU - a lot of us were not supportive of Daschle and wanted him to be dumped or withdraw. I called my Senators and Congressman. Obama doesn't need this distraction. He needs to sell the stimulus plan and not be saddled with questions about Daschle's taxes or lobbying efforts.

I'm really thinking the Dems had more to do with Daschle withdrawing than the Repugs. I think the Repugs would have been content to have Daschle confirmed so that they could use this later on.

I'm pleased - now let's put this behind us and move on.

54. Well...
it's true that he probably wouldn't be able to do an effective job with the Repubs. holding this against him. But Repub. Sen. Jim Demint was just on MSNBC saying he thought this was less about Daschle and more about presidential leadership (meaning Obama "asked" him to withdraw). And he felt it was a good thing for Obama to keep his "brand" of doing things in a more ethical way. He, too, said we can now put this behind us and move on.

For years we've seen this kind of stuff under Bush and I'm glad to see an end to it with Obama.

Dont' give those lying rascals any fodder for their BS partisan stonewalling.

There are others for this job. Daschle knew about his "error" way, way before he took the time to fix it.

Glad to hear this and now let's back to business.

While I'd like to see Dean get the appointment now, I don't see it happening. Every Republican, including McConnell, who almost lost their seat because of the good doctor's efforts would give him complete hell in the hearing process.
