Make it Howard Dean for Health. Scream for it
Edited on Tue Feb-03-09 01:55 PM by TheBigotBasher
I know many Republicans do not like him - but that is because he delivered the Democratic Party an election victory. In politics the winning Candidate always gets the credit, but winning is not just down to the Candidate (as everyone points out when that person does not win). Although to some the Primaries are still a source of bitterness, it is because of that he would be ideal to deliver health. If you can stand up and defend an agreed position against what was considered, at the time, to be the Democratic Party's biggest Political machine, you can face down the Insurance Companies.

Plus put your views to the WhiteHouse.

If there are lots - it may happen.

All he lacks is expertise in moving legislation through Congress
which was what Daschle brought to the table.

22. Actually, yes he did have it
As a Senator, he moved legislation through the Congress.

Plus, being elected to a position is different than being confirmed to an appointed position.

41. Daschle never moved
any legislation through Congress, at least that I remember. He was too busy capitulating to everything the Repubs wanted.

At least Dean moved kid's health reform through the VT lege. So he's got more points than Daschle on this issue.

45. I think Dean's VT kid's health insurance was the VT version of SCHIP
which did pass the Senate when Daschle was the leader in 1997. (I don't know his role - given that Kennedy and Hatch were the sponsors and Kerry and Dodd co-sponsored it.)

60. Experience is a red herring
He had no experience as the head of our Party when he took that job and he aced it. He's the reason Obama is in Washington along with many new Democrats in Congress. Obama had no executive experience and yet, here he is, hitting it out of the park, two weeks in. Two weeks!

Nope, the experience meme was BS when it was used in the primaries and it still is.

Do you remember Daschle, he made Reid seem like a fully spined powerhouse? He was a horrible leader. Should we expect different this time around or should we expect that he might dance with the ones that brung him, ie: the insurance companies, the last people we want at the table discussing healthcare- they are one of the two biggest problems in our current healthcare "system" if by system, you mean sewer system.

71. If he has enough backing from Obama (and by O's direction, Rahm) he wouldn't need it
Let's have some of that Audacity of Hope. If the primary goal is to get it through 'the sausage factory' that is legislation, Daschle was a good choice. If the goal is to make sure you have a healthy and affordable product at the end of the line, Dean is a better choice. What he lacks in legislative expertise could be compensated by his strengths in numerous other areas, and bolstered by other Obama team members.

The Sec'y of HHS is more than a legislative birthing coach; it is also a position that calls for executive experience.

26. Every time any candidate withdraws during confirmation
for whatever reason, the next appointment is ALWAYS further in the direction of the opposition party.

Dean is NOT to the right of Daschle on Healthcare, ergo, Dean will NOT be appointed.

Obama is doing things the way they';ve always been done where the politics of confirmation are concerned, so I don't expect him to do any differently in this one.

70. Instinctively I didn't like him ( Dascchle)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Daschle
Following his election defeat, Daschle took a position with the lobbying arm of the K Street law firm Alston & Bird. Because he was prohibited by law from lobbying for one year after leaving the Senate,<21> he instead worked as a "special policy adviser" for the firm.<22><23>

Alston & Bird's health care lobbying clients include CVS Caremark, the National Association for Home Care and Hospice, Abbott Laboratories and HealthSouth.<7> The firm was paid $5.8 million between January and September 2008 to represent companies and associations before Congress and the executive branch, with 60 percent of that money coming from the health industry.<8> Daschle was recruited by the former Republican Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole.<24> Daschle's salary from Alston & Bird for the year 2008 was reportedly $2 million.<25>

Daschle was also a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress. In addition, he served as National Co-Chair of ONE Vote ‘08 (an initiative of ONE.org), along with former Senator Bill Frist. He and former Senators George Mitchell, Bob Dole, and Howard Baker formed the Bipartisan Policy Center, dedicated to finding bipartisan solutions for policy disputes.<5>

Any more compromise is not really needed.

47. Even before being caught, Edwards was clearly not liked by his
former Senate peers - none endorsed him and Feingold absolutely skewered him. The fact is that neither of the Edwards really had long term credentials on healthcare. EE did not become an advocate on healthcare until after 2004 when she was diagnosed with cancer. (I know she said in a Daily Kos diary that she was a long time supporter of universal health care and that is why she pushed JRE to have a strong program even before she was diagnosed with cancer. This however is not true as JRE had one of the most modest 2004 programs that covered just kids - he blasted Kerry's near universal program as "too expensive" in one of the last primary debates.) She has already been an incredible advocate for early detection, but she has no executive experience, no legislative experience and no policy making experience.

Any Secretary of Health will have to face down the Insurance and Drugs lobbies. Both hugely powerful, with bottomless pits of money. UHC is compromised already - soo it needs someone to be able to force it through as the drugs and insurance lobby will do everything to stop it.

46. Dean was a centrist governor of VT
and he was an advisor to HRC in 1993 when she worked on health care. His own 2004 was not more leftish than Obama's 2008 plan. I don't think the issue is where he is on the spectrum. I also don't think he would be a bad choice.

If he isn't picked, it might be more his image or personality (or at least perceived personality). Though it can't be true that Obama doesn't want combative people - he picked Emanuel.

93. Actually all that was wromg with that scream was
there was no real scream behind it.

Dealing with the media response was the issue, not the scream.

Governor Dr. Howard Dean brings everything to the table that Daschle did not. He's no lobbyist, he has medical experience, he favors single payer, and he's squeaky clean. And by now, I bet he knows his way around Washington pretty well. All principled people have enemies, and Dean has proven himself over and over as a leader. Remember in his campaign, he repeated that we're the only industrialized country without affordable, quality health care.

66. This is what I sent yesterday...
With the withdrawl of Sen. Daschle, I would urge the administration to give strong consideration to Gov Howard Dean for the post of Secretary of HHS. I believe that he would prove to be a strong leader & help us on the road to Universal Single Payer Health Insurance that our people need to protect their health & businesses need to be competitive in the world.
Thank You!

67. Please enlighten me ... does Dean want a position in the
administration? I thought he would be upfront for medicare but I have no Idea why President Obama is reaching across the aisle. As far as I am concerned, the Dems should impeach Bush, Rove and Cheney!

76. K & R Let's keep this one active . . . .
Dr. Dean is a perfect choice . . . if Obama is listening to the people as he said he would . . . if he is the instrument to carry out the wishes of the peoples as he said he was . . . We should experience success if we all e-mail him and nominate Dean!

80. Wasn't Dean pretty 'middle of the road' when he was Governor of Vermont?
 It's been so long I can't remember it all but I thought he was pretty conservative. Why would republicans NOT work with him in DC when they did in VT?

81. He wasn't stellar ...
and has serious problems playing well with others.

I simply cannot imagine him in the halls of congress, wearing the
mantle of health care reformer, and attempting to sway Republicans to the
cause.

Particularly as he spent the last two years insulting the life out of them as
Chairman of the DNC.

His honesty admirable, his enthusiasm lauded ... but in this political and
economic climate, we need a smooth operator. Someone capable of the
gentler arts of persuasion and consensus making.
