CBS Poll: American support for Obama's Plan dropping; Buchanan: It is Pelosi vs. Collins
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/02/05/opinion/polls/main4778192.shtml?source=mostpop_story

(CBS) Slightly more than half the country approves of President Obama's $800 billion-plus stimulus package, a new CBS News poll finds. But support for the bill has fallen 12 points since January, and nearly half of those surveyed do not believe it will shorten the recession.

Fifty-one percent of those surveyed support the stimulus package, while 39 percent do not. An additional 10 percent don't know. Last month, 63 percent supported the package and just 24 percent opposed it.

Americans believe the president is following through on his promise to establish greater bipartisanship in Washington: The public overwhelmingly thinks Obama is reaching out to Congressional Republicans, with 81 percent saying he is doing so.

Obama's approval rating= 62%, Congress approval rating= 26%

On MSNBC, Pat Buchanan has opined that Barack Obama may travel throughout the country campaigning for the stimulus plan and it would not matter; furthermore, he says that the bottom line is a showdown between Susan Collins and nancy Pelosi and that Harry Reid is their errand boy. he predicts that Susan Collins will prevail with her ideas about the plan and that Pelosi has to accept it otherwise the GOP will filibuster and the plan would fail and it would take weeks, perhaps months to get another plan which would be a blow to Obama and sink America in deeper economic trouble. Buchanan went on to say that the most important persons in this stimulus are Susan Collins and Arlen Specter. His Democratic counterpart said: "Let the GOP filibuster, America will punish and blame the GOP if the stimulus plan fails"

5. Question
Is support for the plan dropping BECAUSE of the changes the Republicans are demanding and Democrats in Congress are agreeing to or are less people supporting the plan AS IT WAS WRITTEN? It would seem that the former would certainly be case here at DU (BTW I don't really like all of the "compromises" either).

8. Collins
I don't care who does them, but someone needs to make some commercials against Collins on how she is against education since that was one of the cuts.

9. Sure We've Just Come Off A HIstoric Election Where Obama Won Big......
2 million people converge on D.C. for the inauguration. Newspapers all around the country sold out on Nov 5th. All kinds of Obama memorabilia is available everywhere. And we're supposed to believe these polls.

The corporate media has the 'bully pulpit' and they are setting the tone for the debate on this. President Obama presents a real threat for corporate greed and the and the high style that the wealthy have been living. They don't want President Obama to succeed. The Repugs with the help of some Dems have stripped just enough out of the stimulus bill to make it still look like a stimulus bill - but weak enough to make it fail to hurt Obama.

Most times you put on the cable news shows - you hear Repugs or Repug talking heads blasting Obama and this bill. When they cut to the Senate floor - they show Repugs blasting the bill and not Dems sticking up for it.

The Repug talking heads are still referring to parts of this stimulus bill that have already been cut or dropped - but - the illusion is that their is a lot of pork in the bill.

It appears that change in D.C. will come slow. We just have to have faith in President Obama and continue to stick by him and help him with this change.

Don't believe the polls. Don't believe what the corporate media is spewing.

10. Is Support for the Stimulus Plan Falling?
Mark Blumenthal at Pollster.com takes a look at the polls. How questions are asked makes a big difference in the answers, and the fact that only a few polls have been taken makes the conclusion that actual support for the stimulus bill is falling not so conclusive. I'd be a bit skeptical about the latest media/repug talking point.

12. It is just as much the MSM's fault.
For 2 weeks they have had a continuous stream of rw talking heads spouting the talking point of the day with no sanity to counter it. They treat every point of view as valid no matter how proven wrong it is. Then as the polls start to shift they start putting out reports asking why? They have bowed to their corporate masters again.

13. Buchanan is a fool.
He is stupid and thinks that Ronald Regan is god. Doesn't know he died. I hate to watch him an I mute when he comes on with his stupid talk. He annoys me and MSNbC has him on every day./ He is a loud mouth like Joe Scarborough & Chris mathews. They think that if they talk loud people will think they are for real. It doesn't work. Joe scarborough is going over the edge. He is getting nuttier every day. If I were Mika I would slap him down a lot more than she does. He is rude and so is Pat.

14. I'm really pissed that the Repubs and their media minions have
decided to use Nancy Pelosi as the foil for their eight freakin years of incompetency. Now its Nancy's fault--she's the puppet master huh? Always great to trash the ladies huh? Pat Buchanan, CBS, FOX, ABC, MSMBC, John Kyl, John Mccain and every other asshole that allowed Dick Cheney to daily force them to bend over don't give a DAMN, let me repeat it, they don't give a DAMN about the middle class in America. I can't wait until 201 so that we can kill the Republican party off entirely. Then they can stand outside of Pelosi's office and hurl their feces at the walls. I'm going to call my representatives and senators for the staet of California and demand that they increase spending and kill the tax cuts. Let John Kyle fillibster--force them to expose their filfthy little faces.

15. Those numbers aren't even new, those numbers have been fairly consistent for a month
The reason for the 'drop' which happened a month ago, not recently, is because once they actually started to get specific on what would be in the package some people started to not like it quite as much.

The reason for the drop is because support for everything tends to drop a little once you get more specific, like people opposed the war in Iraq, but were very divided on how to get out of there and when, with majorities opposing every specific plan mentioned (leave in 3 months, 6 months, etc)

I don't approve of these spineless bungling wimps either. Lots of more hardcore dems feel the same. I don't know what's going to happen in 2010.
