Carl Bernstein was just excellent on Countdown
He came on ostensibly to talk about the document drama, but he gave a much better critique of the media than I have heard from many other journalists--barring Christianne Amanpour.

He said, in effect, that the media keeps talking about these peripheral issues rather than about the real concerns of the campaign, which we of course know. But he also talked about he fallaciousness of this whole "debate" structure of cable news, which he said indicated the failings of cable talk generally. Bernstein said that the coverage of the Swift Boat craziness was indicative of how these debates fail because it provides equal time to those who defend Kerry (if only!) and to the Swift Smearers, although "95% of what they say is a lie on its face." I am sympathetic to this position because I just griped to Robert Greenwald about exactly the same thing....

Anyhow, if you get a chance to see Countdown's repeat, watch it. Bernstein looks more and more like a sage as I know more about Woodward.

1. He was great.
I also liked when he talked about this White House not wanting to tell the truth.

3. Only problem I have with Bernstein is his association with Woodward.
Woodward is a complete toad. I realize Bernstein's politics are probably pretty close to my own, but he seems much more intelligent.

6. I think Bernstein tries to maintain integrity DESPITE his link to Woodward
The problem is that most in the media put Woodward up on a pedestal and marginalize Bernstein so he has no bite.

7. I blame that on the very cute Robert Redford playing him LOL.
Okay, you were being serious, but for the longest every time I heard "Bob Woodward" I thought Robert Redford. Until I saw him.
And definitely before I found out what a sellout he is.
