Uh oh! Teresa H Kerry: "let them go naked for a while, at least the kids"
Uh oh. Will the GOP try to make something of this?
>>>>

Teresa Heinz Kerry, encouraging volunteers as they busily packed supplies Wednesday for hurricane relief efforts in the Caribbean, said she was concerned the effort was too focused on sending clothes instead of essentials like water and electric generators.

"Clothing is wonderful, but let them go naked for a while, at least the kids," said Heinz Kerry, the wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). "Water is necessary, and then generators, and then food, and then clothes."

Heinz Kerry stopped by a market in the heart of Brooklyn's Caribbean community, where she spoke French with Haitian vendors and shook hands with volunteers busy packing food, clothes and other relief supplies to be shipped to several Carribean islands hit by Hurricane Ivan. Her husband's campaign donated water, blankets and first aid kits.

"I think it's important we help all the kids we can," Heinz Kerry said.

1. Growing up in Africa she understands emergency supplies means water, food,
medicine. Clothes and blankets at this time of year are secondary supplies.

4. Uh-no! She said, 'naked'.
It's statements like these that remind me Theresa comes from a different culture. Her candidness and the fact that she's down-to-earth is so refreshing! I love her!

10. The point being that she is trying to get them cake.
Along with water, meds, other thing necessary to life. As she rightly pointed out clothing is optional right now.

6. More right wing fodder....but if you think about it...
you can't win with the right wing, they have no morals, no dignity, no sense of fair play, no courtesy, and nothing is too low a blow.

8. Headline on Faux: "Let them eat cake?"
Of course in context her comments make perfect sense, but, like Kerry's so-called "sensitive war" comment, the only line that will be mentioned is "let them go naked."

9. During Hurricane Andrew
my husband and I wanted to do something for the victims. We own a screen printing company, so we sent down boxes of 'dude' t-shirts.

Unfortunately, the relief workers couldn't deal with this sort of donation, since they weren't even doing a good job providing food and water. The boxes ended up in a warehouse somewhere, got soaking wet, and ended up being thrown away. The whole thing turned into a giant waste.

Teresa is right. Send the cloths later when folks have homes to go back to and a place to keep their stuff dry.

11. Of course she is absolutely right
What good are clothes if you don't have clean drinking water or food? However, people will drop all mentions of her comments in context and focus on "let them go naked". I actually feel sorry for her because people who tell the truth are very often misunderstood or misrepresented.

Yes, I understand what she was trying to say, but the media is out to "rip the bark off the Kerrys" and they won't let this go.

14. Why is it no one in this country can talk like an adult?
The moment anyone tries to say something adult they are shouted down. This reminds me of Surgeon General Elders, and Hillary Clinton. This country hates adult women.

31. So many of our early pioneer ancestors were misfits & religious nuts
Edited on Thu Sep-16-04 10:05 AM by dumpster_baby
THe happy ones, the calm ones, the sensible ones, the ones who fit in with the villages, their neighbors, their society, they stayed home in Europe, satisfied, productive, etc. But the misfits, the ones with brains that were just a little bit off-center, the outliers, the religious nuts, the troublemakers, the ones who could not fit in, they came to America. And that process is still ongoing. Culturally and biologically, most of us are the descendants of those misfits.

America is as rich and powerful as it is largely though natural causes, geography, and historical accident.

18. Maslow's Heirarchy of Need:
1. need for air, food, or water

2. protection and freedom from fear and anxiety

3. need to belong and to be loved

4. need for self-esteem

5. need for self-actualization

SO, once again teresa's right.

Abraham H. Maslow, American Psychiatrist, b. 1908

21. unfortunately, the wingnuts will be confusing "naked" with "nekkid."
the difference, according to lewis grizzard, being that if you're "naked," you have no clothes on. if you're "nekkid," then you have no clothes on and you're up to something.

22. Don't worry. The freepers are already on top of this one...
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1217609/posts

At least one person on the list was willing to concede that there was a hierarchy of needs.

Others are simply racist.

Still others point out how stupid she is because she missed this or that need.

The typical logic and vitriolic hate of a freeper.

23. Sending clothes is probably easier than food and water
We can all go to our closets and weed out what we don't want to wear anymore and give it away, but food and water are somewhat perishable and cost money. It means sending money which is harder than sending something that would have gone to goodwill anyway.

As far as children going naked, I thing that was poetic license. She was saying that food and water may be in short supply and needs to be made a priority.

any parent will tell ya, kids want to be naked, most get modest sometime after age 4 or so, but younger, they strip as soon at you turn your back

32. Americans are generally too prudish.
Most of the world is not so obsessed about nudity. It is quite understandable that Theresa shares that world view, having been born and raised in Mozambique. She is indeed an African American.

The most prudish people of all are the conservative Republicans who support Bush IMO. Let them get their noses bent out of joint over this if they want to. I doubt if their rants against Theresa are likely to sway any undecided voters.

33. How could anyone argue against such COMMON SENSE?
Anyone who would even attempt to argue against what she said is just exposing their extreme stupidity. Of course food and shelter come first. everyone will just have to wear the same clothes for a few days. I am sure no one will go naked.
