Where would we be right now if McCain/Palin had won? |

Tax cuts for banks? Eliminate Social Security and Medicare as wasteful pork? Palin getting more clothes and being on TV every day?
I think we came very close to the end of civilization.

With Palin and her AIP dominionist friends whispering into McCrazy's addled ear, McCain would probably declare at least 4 wars by now. Iran, Syria, North Korea, and Russia.
And by March he would declare war on NATO because they called during his nap time :lol

I guess so, one of the founding nations when it came to NATO in 1949, and a country who for the most part had been loyal to the interest of US....
But if McCain/Palin had for a second believed that the population of Norway had accepted that US was to bomb us to do what US want, then they might get into a surprise.. I know most american have no clue where Norway are, but our nature is as made to wage a guerrilla war style against enemies.. And if you thing that Iraq is bad, just wait to se what become of many americans if they want to occupy Norway... Not that we have had to much to say military but as some general in Norway once put it. The GI soldier in Norway are not easy to command, they ask everything and can be a pain in the as, but give him a reason to do it, and you might have the best soldier in the world..
On the other side I would guess that the close friendship that Norway and US have had for more than 70 year Will be some of the past, if McCain/Palin was to wage a war. And if worst was to because, Norway would find a new friend in Russia, who might benefit from the withdraw of our NATO membership...
If US was to attack a NATO member, I fear that the whole concept of a NATO alliance Will be killed when the first bomb was hitting their target.. And I am also afraid that US was on the loosing end in Europe, for many, many decades to came if they was indeed attack a NATO member in Europe... This is a bridge that even the neo-con are not willing to ruin.. They almost did it in the 8 year of the administration of mr Bush.. Any war inside the alliance, would have killed any hope of rebuilding the friendship, between Europe and US... And US need all the friends they can get this days...

Believe me, when I say that we are stubborn here in Norway and Sweden too, maybe more than in MN... And it would be a hell of problems for everyone who wanted to occupy us.. When the germans occupied Norway in the 1940s, they hit the wall against our stubbornness time and time again.. And they just not got it, why we acted as we did... And the germans was pretty hewyhanded in the 5 year they was here...

True, but in Norway Quisling was never very popular, by all accounts of the time, most Norwegians was looking at Quisling as nothing less than a traitor to the country, and was not so happy to have anything with him to do in the first place.. And the germans "got" the message in the end, because in most cases Quisling and NS was been ignored when the germans decided something.. Off course we have our "state act" in 1941-42 where Quisling was given the reign - officially, but in reality the germans was playing the show, and Quisling would be nothing less than a puppet for the germans true the war...
And in any cases, Quisling was given the death penalty in the end of the war, and shot at Akershus Fortress and Castle.. And he was followed by many others...
Quisling have also given name to the international term for a treator... And the family name of Qusling have been more or less banned from public use in Norway ever since

47. In Madison, WI there is a Quisling Clinic started by the brothers of Vidkun. |
|
They are a family of medical doctors over here. I knew a son of one of the founding brothers--he was a freshman in my dorm when I was a senior undergrad student at Madison. We were not close--I thought he was an arrogant little rich kid--but I do remember him trying to justify Vidkun's actions during the war, saying that he took on the job of puppet for the good of the Norwegian people, that he kept trying to modify and ameliorate the harshness of Nazi rule.
The Quisling kid I knew ended up getting his medical degree and joining the family clinic.

The Repugs would prefer the actual cost to be hidden so it doesn't frighten them.

6. your question has occurred to me many times |
|
It's a real source of comfort, when I realize that no matter how much I worry now, at least I feel fairly safe in assuming that things will get better eventually. I think that there would be no upside to what's going on now, if McCain had won; now, I think we're going to see a real change for the better in the long term. It's painful now but there is hope with a set of people-focused solution that wouldn't be there with the solely institution-focused solutions that McCain would have tried to come up with.
For example, I can imagine that the catastrophic decline in retirement savings, which is scary enough for those of us a decade or two from retirement but must be terrifying for those just a couple of years or less away, will be at least partially offset by the security of a meaningful safety net in terms of health care. A McCain administration would have made a priority out of maintaining the incredible differences in wealth between the upper class and the middle class; the Obama administration is going to see that difference lessen, and increased social spending is going to make life better for those at the lower end of the income ladder, too.
With Obama, this difficult period is going to make our country better in the long run; with McCain, it would have been a slow slide towards a pit we could never dig ourselves out of.

... to say that that really would have been the end of any hope that America would ever again bear any resemblance to the country it's been for the past 230 years. I'm not saying that it would have become unlivable or a banana republic or dictatorship or anything like that. But it would just be a place to live, and not the place where people want to come for a better life.

passed by the Dem control Congress. Boner & Cantor would still be whining about Pelosi, McConnell & Graham would still be whining about Reid. Dems in the House approve anything they wanted, but the Senate would be the place all bills would die.
McCain/Palin's cabinet picks would be stopped by a Democratic majority (how could they approve Sec. of State Tom Delay or Attorney General Rick Santorum,??) and McCain would end up making recess appointments.
... and the rightwing would still be blaming Obama for the state of the economy.

37. Memos like this one might still be operational, and would of course still be secret. |
|
http://www.newsweek.com/id/187342In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, the Justice Department secretly gave the green light for the U.S. military to attack apartment buildings and office complexes inside the United States, deploy high-tech surveillance against U.S. citizens and potentially suspend First Amendment freedom-of-the-press rights in order to combat the terror threat, according to a memo released Monday.
Many of the actions discussed in the Oct. 23, 2001, memo to then White House counsel Alberto Gonzales and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's chief lawyer, William Haynes, were never actually taken.
But the memo from the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel—along with others made public for the first time Monday—illustrates with new details the extraordinary post-9/11 powers asserted by Bush administration lawyers. Those assertions ultimately led to such controversial policies as allowing the waterboarding of terror suspects and permitting warrantless wiretapping of U.S. citizens—steps that remain the subject of ongoing investigations by Congress and the Justice Department. The memo was co-written by John Yoo, at the time a deputy attorney general in the Office of Legal Counsel. Yoo, now a professor at the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, has emerged as one of the central figures in those ongoing investigations....
