OMFG...What is up with all these "crippled" threads?
It is "differently abled." Crippled is such a derogatory term.
Seriously, Obama is doing fine. His administration is doing fine. Ease off.

And I am ok with the term disabled.

2. People I know who are disabled hate that "differently abled" crap
They find it offensive. It's like saying the truth of their lives is too unpleasant for our delicate sensibilities and has to be smoothed over so we can feel good about ourselves.

3. I refer to myself as a crip
during times like now when my MS is acting up and one of my legs is dragging. I hate differently abled or challenged.

8. I agree...
in a way, it's almost like purposely not looking at someone who's disabled to avoid the impression that we're staring at them because they are disabled.

We don't want them to think we're staring, so we avert our eyes.

So many disabled people then feel like they're being treated like they're invisible.

In a way, it's an insult to them to presume to know what they want to be called.

Either that, or it's a way for people to feel a bit superior..."Well...at least I know the proper way to label others".

And that's the ironic thing. "Crippled". "Disabled". "Differently abled".

All labels.

anyway, like I said, I agree.

I have very bad knees and at times cannot walk properly. I also have panic disorder and agoraphobia. I refer to myself as "disabled".

9. "Cripple" is still an apt term to use where malice is implied.
I liken "crippled" to "knee-capped" these days.

My mom has had polio since age 6 and the term throughout the 60s and 70s was "crippled", then "disabled" became the more appropriate term to use.

Still, however, we may use "cripple" to describe a deliberate act, or "crippled" to describe victims of such acts.

Dictionary definitions of the two terms suggest a bit of the observation above; a bit more malice is associated with some of the definitions of "cripple", while "disable" may include legitimate actions without malice.

11. "Crippled"
I was seriously injured in an automobile accident that was entirely the fault of the driver on one of the three vehicles involved. In legal documents, the medical experts from the opposition deemed me "100% disabled." The word "crippled" does not bother me. Plus, I like John Lennon's song, "Crippled Inside." It wouldn't have worked as "Differently Abled Inside," in my opinion.
