Obama's stupid 'special olympics' joke is proof the man is human.
Edited on Thu Mar-19-09 10:05 PM by Unsane
He pretty much blew the whole appearance with that stupid joke attempt. It was the kind of thing you say with your friends in the office, not on a national talk show. Now we get to hear about this for the next few days. Obama's own quip will hinder his budget/AIG media blitz.

Edit: I fully expect his office to issue some sort of apology in the next 24 hrs.

2. I just walked into the house, and this post was waiting for me.
I can't imagine what he could have said that would put his budget in peril?

What I do know is that I was working (at a nursery school) and my co-workers and I agreed
that everyone foot is in Obama's ass for every thing he says and does. I told them that
we shouldn't be surprised if another foot isn't added daily.

So what did he say that was so horrible that you would post such?

7. That's it?
I think the blogs getting all exercised about this is what will cause it to be covered.

Oh well.....another outrage!

8. What do you mean "that's it"?
This is the type of thing liberals would absolutely scorch Bush for doing. I fully expect the politically incorrect right wing to feign faux outrage over this just like they pretended to give a shit about sexism towards Palin. We know they're huge fucking hypocrites though, with all the "POTUS is a monkey" posts over at Free Republic and other right wing blogs.

10. Let me see if I can get this straight. Is there some kind of gag order
in speaking about the Special Olympics?

My Stepdaughter is physically handicapped. She was hit by a car when she was 4 years old and nearly died. She did recover, but to this day, one of her leg is noticeably shorter than the other, and she has to wear special shoes and the whole bit. She runs the nursery school where I work part time. Was the President's comment supposed to have "hurt" her?

19. There's a reason why we'd tear Bush to shreds over this.
Edited on Fri Mar-20-09 01:13 AM by backscatter712
OK, first, yes, I have some minor disabilities - I was born with club feet, walk a little funny, am terrible at sports. If all Obama said was that his bowling was out of the Special Olympics, big fuckin' deal.

If Bush said it, yes, I'd take offense, because Bush has a looooooooong history of saying things like that out of pure meanness, and damned well should be called for continuing that trend. Obama does not have that history.

23. He also belongs to the Bigot Party
The Republican Party is the Bigot Party end of story. When they cease to be the Bigot Party I will react to their off color remarks the same way I react to the off color remarks made by Democrats.

20. Bush and Obama are 2 different people.
Obama is not Bush. Obama will do many great things for the Special Olympics (and related causes). We know this.

See: http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/09/02/13/Biden-honors-a-movement-at-the-Special-Olympics/

The difference is, Bush did not give a damn. So Bush making a similar comment could NOT be taken the same way, at all.

13. You can bet your ass
If Bush had said something that stupid and insensitive, we'd be all over it with dozens of threads excoriating him.

Am I wrong?

11. To me it was a remark in passing...
Not at all the same as targetting the Special Olympics for ridicule. Rather like calling someone who says or does something stupid a "retard." That said, it was impolitic, but not more in my view. Republicans who try to make hay over this need to get a life.

14. Remember Clayton Williams's clumsy rape joke?
He thought it was hilarious--bad weather is like being raped, so relax and enjoy it. It also didn't go over very well, but the women's groups were in a far greater position to complain.

15. Please.
He blew nothing. You could barely even hear it. And it wasn't anything to apologize over. Talk about cranking up the false outrage machines. People on this site are worse than the corporate media sometimes.

night and early morning hours. Sort of like a self-righteous and/or hate-filled INFESTATION? :(

21. Let's do some research. Let's find out who has done more for disabled people
Will the Republicans be able to back up their faux outrage tomorrow on the tv with proof of voting for legislation that has helped the disabled? If they can't, then it will be easy to shame them. Keith O will be on top of that, I'm sure. But we should be on top of it also. Let us not forget that Obama signed the SCHIP legislation that will help children in need (Including disabled children).
The Republicans sharpening their claws for tomorrow are the ones who have denied giving children (including disabled children) healthcare because it's "socialism". It's almost 2010, so it's time for them to pretend that they care about the middle class (faux AIG outrage) and now the physically handicapped (Leno).
