Obama's next gift to Gordon Brown: TV and DVD player
The faux outrage story arc is building even as we speak:

Week 1: President Obama gives PM Brown tacky gift of 25 classic American movies on DVD. Five thousand talking heads discuss and tweet how tacky the gift is and bemoan the fact that "Patton" wasn't on the list, and there were no Reagan or Schwarzenegger films.

Week 2: PM Brown attempts to play said tacky gift; it doesn't work in Brown's DVD player. Five thousand talking heads discuss and tweet how tacky it is he'd give A Foreign Head Of State a gift he can't use.

Week 3: President Obama buys, with his own money, a new TV and DVD player, and sends it to PM Brown. Five thousand talking heads discuss and tweet how terrible Obama's work to increase America's scandalous trade deficit with China is.

Week 4: PM Brown plays the 25 DVDs, doesn't like any of them. Conservative Outrage Factory adds third shift to meet demand.

I guess it beats talking about how Phil Gramm destroyed the economy.

3. If you have the right DVD player you can play any DVD.
DVD players are build to operate in about 8 zones. Some players will only play DVD's produced in one zone. For some reason unknown to me the cheap ones will generally play more than one zone. The TV is another problem since they use a different format.

7. If they didn't have one, they do now
Come on: if all else fails the Prime Minister could just call his US Ambassador and ask him to pick up a DVD player next time he's in the store, and mail it to him. (I assume they already have a multisystem TV--global leadership these days almost demands being able to watch foreign TV news.)

On a related note: considering that all televisions are made in China and they don't sync off powerline frequencies anymore, WHY ISN'T THERE ONE STANDARD FOR DIGITAL TELEVISION?

9. Please don't forget the converters and adapters!
Otherwise the US devices won't fit in UK plugs and the higher current will burn them out!
