Kerry Requests Investigation of Unsterile Instruments in Veterans Hospitals

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) today asked the Department of Veterans Affairs to conduct a thorough review of the sanitation standards at Veterans hospitals.

In a letter to Department of Veterans Affairs Inspector General George Opfer, Senator Kerry expressed his alarm following reports that up to 9,000 patients in VA facilities in Florida and Tennessee may have had invasive procedures such as colonoscopies performed with contaminated equipment. These veterans have since been exposed to a variety of infectious diseases including claims by some of Hepatitis C.

“The Veterans Administration has inherited a tragic situation, and a full review is needed so we can find out how this happened, correct the situation, and make sure it never happens again,” said Kerry. “The Obama Administration has already been a breath of fresh air. They’ve taken responsibility. But it’s our job in Congress to make sure we’re doing our part to meet the needs of veterans and cooperation is essential to fulfilling President Obama’s commitment to increasing the quality and delivery of care in our nation’s veterans hospitals. Every veteran in this country should be confident in the care they are given so these brave men and women can focus on their families and their futures. I never want any veteran to fear for their care when they go in for tests at the hospitals we built to serve them.”

The full text of the letter is below:

Dear Inspector General Opfer:

I applaud the selection of General Shinseki as Secretary, and I am encouraged already that President Obama has proposed a budget for healthcare in the Department of Veterans Affairs that will expand the eligibility of services to thousands of previously unqualified veterans.

Still, we know that the quality of care for our veterans is not yet at the high standard President Obama has set, in large measure due to problems the Administration has inherited. I am particularly alarmed by the recent reports regarding the use of unsterile medical equipment at VA facilities.

Recent reports indicated that up to 3,000 patients at a VA hospital in Miami, Florida may have had colonoscopies with equipment that was not properly sterilized and that a VA facility in Tennessee did not utilize properly sterilized equipment when performing this same procedure and may have exposed upwards of 6,000 patients to a variety of infectious diseases, some of whom have now claimed to be infected with Hepatitis C.

The timing and extent of these two exposures are troubling to me. The second exposure in Miami, Florida leads me to believe that proper steps may not have been taken in light of the incident in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Accordingly, I ask that the Office of Inspector General conduct a thorough review of this matter. The review, at a minimum should address the following critical questions: What actions did the Department of Veterans Affairs take when the VA learned that patients at the Murfreesboro, Tennessee facility may have been exposed; exactly how many other facilities in the VA healthcare system conduct colonoscopies; and what steps are being taken to ensure that veteran’s are not exposed to this level of risk in the future.

We all agree that care and commitment to our nation’s veterans must be our top priority, and that they deserve better than this. As you do, I understand well the importance of ensuring that they have faith in the VA healthcare system. In order to maintain that faith it is of the utmost importance that a quick and thorough review be conducted.

Thank you for your serious consideration of this request and I look forward to hearing back from you regarding this matter.

Sincerely,

John F. Kerry

This (in this article) is just another example of why I admire this man so much and why he is one of my top political heroes. Still so proud to have cast my first Presidential vote for him and glad to have him on our team! :D

2. Senator Kerry has fought for improvements at the VA hospitals
since he returned from Vietnam - even before he spoke out against the war - in the year he worked for the Navy in Brooklyn.

3. Doesn't surprise me. VA reusing colonoscopy equipment to save $$ forfeit lives. Unreal.
My dad was a vet and for like 10-15 years his docs at the VA kept saying he just had hemoroids until his colon cancer got so bad they had to cut a major portion of it out to save his life. He went down to 94 pounds. 6 foot tall down to 94 pounds.

Thank you John Kerry. Maybe if we keep banging on this drum louder and louder the deaf ears of the VA will finally feel the shockwaves like Bethoven "heard" his piano playing through the vibration. Then soldiers will be treated with proper respect not just when they choose to go out and serve, but when they come home and need medical care.

4. It's a tragedy how "*" et al treated our vets.
From the recently wounded to those who accepted the promise years ago, our country owes them. They should be able to expect decent care.

I'm glad to see another vet, a war hero no less, watching their backs once again. The truth is he's still a hero and he's still fighting for those who wear or have worn the uniform.

We did the country a disservice when we failed to elect him.

Thank you Senator Kerry.

6. I'm in the medical field...
and I've seen first-hand sub-standard care from VA employees. I'm not sure why this is, because the facilities themselves are lavishly decorated and not visibly wanting of an increased budget;, The ones I've worked in are by far the best long-term care residences I've seen, but the actual care provided? Alarming.

7. I am pleased to hear this. I know veterans who have been complaining
about conditions at some VA hospitals for years. Add this to the distance some vets must travel to reach these hospitals and you have to conclude this is a poor way to treat the men and women who serve and protect our country bravely.
