The girls wanted the dog; they should learn the responsibility of taking care of him. I think that's how Michelle will see it.

They'll either take turns sleeping with him, or he'll have a dog bed in the family room.

42. My 3 granddaughters' dog sleeps on all 3 of their beds in random order.
Oddly, they don't fight over this (they fight over everything else). The dog does "favor" one of them over the other two, however - the middle girl. I think it's because the older one is getting to be too much of a diva to have a dog on her bed and the little one is more indifferent. The middle girl is more solicitous...

The girls will be picking up after their dog. It will be good for them to do that. Also on MSNBC they talked about the book Barbara Bush wrote about her dog Millie. The girls should do the same thing and make millions of dollars for themselves and help dog and cat shelters too. How funny would that be. The girls make more money than their dad in office.

8. Probably IN BED with one of the girls.
We started out crate training our dog and that lasted six weeks before my hubby had her snuggled in our bed with the "oh honey just for tonight, ok?" The dog never left. And so much for the crate which she has never entered again.

But I'm incredibly blessed, in three solid years my dog has NEVER had an inside accident except as puppy as six weeks and she only had two of those. She is incredibly smart, and seeks us out when she has to go. We take her everywhere, she travels like a dream and we can leave her in the hotel room when we go out and she just plays with her toys and waits for us to return.

Of course, she knew she wouldn't have to hold it because we don't make her.

and now she will never go into the crate. When I adopted the second one a few months later I made sure that she was in the crate for a little bit each day (even if just for 30 minutes)so she can stay comfortable with it.

64. I guess we just gave the crate up because there was no need
for it. She won't have an accident so no need for the crate (and I'm knocking on wood as I say this).

I also think I'm lucky on this because we only have one dog. When you have more than one, accidents become more likely - once a dog (or cat) has had an accident it becomes a "spot" that other dogs (and cats) think it is ok to pee on.

She doesn't have any competition. My sister has two dogs that usually are quite trained but when her son got one and brought it over, they ALL started wetting on the floor (the proverbial pissing contest).

Once the third dog was removed, it stopped.

(all males)

It's funny too - when I take her to the dog park she is fine with all dogs and loves to play but if she is sitting on my lap and another dog approaches she gets very aggressive. (protection time).

63. This is not surprising!
;-)

Dogs learn housebreaking really fast when they're crate trained for a number of weeks, as long as someone is there to let the pup out when s/he needs to "go." And what you describe is very common.

It's probable that Bo is housebroken; he's six months old, but he just needs to know where the right door is and how to get there.

65. They learn it fast when they are smart. Not all dogs are.
Let's face it - dogs are like humans - some of them are dumb. One of my physical therapists that comes to the house asked me why her poodle keeps going on the floor - she said she trained it to "pads" and when she lets it out it pees in her garage on spare carpet pieces.

I don't know why people use those dumb pads. Why teach a dog it's ok to pee inside at all?

I was fortunate that I was home 24/7 so when I got her, I simply took her outside every hour and anytime there was input (water or food). She caught on VERY quickly. Had three accidents the first week and then her times were stretched further and further.

I was curious if she'd be trouble in the bed with us, but she never had an accident or got down to do it. She simply walks up to the head of the bed and lays her head on our necks. (our signal - I've got to go!) And we take her no matter when it is. Rarely does she ask at night but we always do.

So she has no reason to go inside and is smart enough to know it.

67. Dogs will not pee or defecate in their beds.
That's the brilliance about crate training if you do it right. Also, dogs puke occasionally. One of my daughters seemed amazed to find that I "taught" the dogs to puke outside, but this was only due to my reaction at being waked up in the middle of the night by hurling sounds! "Out, out!" I would say. I only wanted the dog to get outside before s/he hurled.

73. OF course they will! LOL It doesn't happen often but
dogs certainly will pee and or deficate IN THEIR crates if they have to! It always cracks me up when people think they can leave at 6 in the morning and come home at 7 or 9 at night and the dog is covered in poop. They actually say "but they said they wouldn't do that"?

Some people are too stupid to own dogs.

She is cute as a button but not easy to train. We finally have the sit command down which is something I guess. The Shepherd is easy. She learns everything so quickly. This one will be tougher but we will get there eventually.

Only because (speaking from experience but with having three dogs who sleep with me)---once the person in bed WITH that dog rolls over or moves enough to disturb the dog---doggie suddenly is awake and realizes he/she has to go pottie. No matter what time it is...midnight, 3 am, 5 am. I imagine it would be 10 times worse with a puppy.

31. No it's not.
both of my doxies sleep in their crates with the doors open. It's their happy place where they have their blankies and hide treasures they steal from the children. Whenever we give them a treat they each run inside to eat it in peace. Both of mine have been trained to go to their crates and stay when told, too ("Go to bed"). It is quite rare that the doors are ever closed.

Now there are people who abuse crates and leave dogs in there for hours--that is abusive.

He never minded being locked in when my parents weren't home, but when my parents were no longer at home (long story) and I moved in to take care of him, I let him sleep on the sofa with his favorite blanket, and sleep up in bed with me.

Now my dad is coming back home today, and it should be interesting to see if he takes to being locked in at night....

I've visited on thehotdogblog but only posted a couple of times when they first adopted us. The female on the right is the most obnoxious little spoiled brat who's every wrapped me around her fat little paw. The male on the left is a double-dapple and was a rescue. He'd been cooped up for most of his days in a tiny little crate that was too small for most cats. He's an amazing little guy, so full of energy and eager to please (and easy to train, unlike the other little demonesse).

.... then it would be the beauty salon just off of the family dining room and just off of either Sasha or Malia's bedroom ... which was also John John's bedroom. To put it into historical perspective, three windows down from where Lincoln gave his famous final speech denouncing slavery right in front of John Wilkes Booth.

That's where Millie's bed and bowl was anyway....

45. He shouldn't sleep in the girls' room
Since one of the girls has an allergy to dog dander(I can't recall which one), it would be better for Bo to sleep somewhere other than their room. Even though he's supposed to be a hypoallergenic breed of dog, the little girl's allergy might get worse if she's exposed to the dog while sleeping.

As someone with allergies, married to someone with allergies, and with two grown daughters with allergies, I've learned that those with allergies fare better if they are able to sleep in a clean room at night with no exposure to the allergy-causing substance.

Bo will certainly be more likely to sleep through the night in Sasha's room. It's tough for puppies used to a litter to be left alone all night.

60. Ellen DeGeneres gave Michelle a dog house that looks like a mini-White House.
Maybe they'll use that.

61. My guess about the process is this:
Crate trained, initially. Presidents have dog handlers. Next, dog bed next to President Obama and First Lady Obama's bed.

Next...in the bed.

Next, possibly under the covers, though probably not; this is an old joke with dog lovers, but few people really tolerate it.

;-)

Once President Clinton was interviewed about the Buddy's sleeping with him at night when the first lady was gone. (No jokes, please.) He remarked about how Buddy was flat up against his body--I know this well from experience. Hilarious!

Bo's an energetic dog and a loving dog. He will try to get up on beds. Whether he's allowed to do that or to stay on beds is another matter. He won't be allowed on other furniture.
