Appreciation thread for Greenwald, Olby, etc. for making our President change his tune on torture
Today for the first time, President Obama substitute "Let the attorney general decide" for his "let's move forward rather than backward" meme.

Kudos to President Obama for changing his tune and listening to his real base: Progressives. Us.

3. He hasn't substituted anything.
Don't confuse impatience and the original conflating of the interrogators with the architects by some as accurately reflecting what Obama said.

You can read the entire article of his comments here.

4. That's an awful lot of speculation there!
Too much for my taste.

That's like giving credit to the witch doctor for the rain!

5. He hasn't changed his tune. He's stated his position succinctly regarding accountability.
As a Constitutional scholar, I doubt many are more acutely aware of the rule of law than he.

6. I like Greenwald and think bloggers play an important role in applying pressure
But I really don't think we can say if they specifically made Obama change his tune, or if a tune was really changed at all .

7. Yes!
It takes a strong, mature person to admit
that his first decision wasn't the right one.

Our former Commander in Thief could
never do that.

I'm glad President Obama is listening to the voice of reason.

9. His first decision was that the CIA operatives would not be prosecuted.
Edited on Tue Apr-21-09 01:47 PM by AtomicKitten
It was some of the, um, more anxious leftie pundits that extrapolated and issued the false declaration that there would be no prosecutions of anyone. Those were premature predictions, not factual.

Rahm Emanuel's dumbass statement on the Sunday talk show was walked back yesterday (on edit: link http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=8360114&mesg_id=8360114 ), and President Obama clarified today very clearly EXACTLY where he stands.

15. What are you talking about?!
Edited on Tue Apr-21-09 01:49 PM by vaberella
Pres O has NEVER changed his tune or admitted he was wrong. He's followed through on his same course of action. Why can't you give him the credit?!

What Rahm and Gibbs said is not what the President had said before. They had a different story. Not President O. He stuck to his guns.

24. I stand corrected.
Edited on Tue Apr-21-09 02:31 PM by Kajsa
this is what I was referring to,

" President Obama substitute "Let the attorney general decide" for his "let's move forward rather than backward" meme."

If his decision was to let the AG decide from the beginning,
I stand corrected.

http://tinyurl.com/ce22w5

That was not the impression I had with both President Obama and VP Biden answering with
the "let's look forward" meme.
From that, I took that there would be no prosecutions, whatsoever.

Strange how a lot of other people
were under the same impression.

So back the hell down.
I didn't accuse him of murder.
That's what your reaction sounds like.

btw, I AM giving him credit, I made that very clear in my post.
I don't know how you deduced anything else.

8. As I watch the pess conf trying to trap Gibb in changing tune meme, I don't think Obama has.
Patting ourselves on the back notwithstanding, he said we wanted to look forward and never precluded in anything he said that the process wouldn't go forward. There are committees, there is Justice, but as much as ever, Obama does not want politicization when important stuff needs to be done. He also talked sincerely about the weight of keeping us safe. We need the CIA for that.

It's complicated.

Where is all the non-stop righteousness over economic injustice and crime affecting liffe and death. Could it be revenge more than justice?

19. Neither do I.. I have been listening to his language VERY carefully
from the beginning on this. He hasn't changed his statements.. The assumptions of the listeners have changed. The assumptions of the press have changed.

Even the clumsey circumlocutions of Rahm this past weekend.. and if you look AT THE ACTUAL WORDS that he said... even HE didn't say that prosecutions weren't going to happen.

It's amazing what a difference it makes to read the actual transcripts....

think they made Obama change his mind. I don't think he's changed his mind at all. I do think he's playing chess.

13. O NEVER changed his tune. I knew this was going to happen.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=8360565&mesg_id=8360565

There is always someone wanting to discredit O in his move to make a decision. He makes his moves and everyone else falls into place. Makes me sick when they want to take it from him and give it to others. Please.

14. All he's said is that "he wants to look forward".. He has also said
"no one is above the law"

He has NEVER said that prosecutions for the Bush Admin were "off the table"...

22. This is called internet narcissism navel gaze derangement syndrome
First of all, Obama's position has not changed. He has elaborated the "how" of what person will be responsible for prosecutions for those who did not rely on OLC opinions, which were always implicit in his statements.

It's easy while being a keyboard warrior and reading other poutraged keyboard warriors to believe that one's scribblings have changed the world, when in fact no such thing has happened.
