Michelle Obama says she hopes abolitionist Sojourner Truth would be proud to see a descendent of slaves as America’s first black first lady. Mrs. Obama made the comment Tuesday as she helped unveil a bust of Truth, the first black woman to be honored with a statue at the Capitol.

"I am proud to be able to stand here on this day," the first lady told the audience of mostly women.

Truth is a former slave who met with Abraham Lincoln and was an early crusader for women’s right to vote and an end to slavery. Mrs. Obama said her two young daughters will now be able to "see the face of a woman who looks like them" when they visit the nation’s Capitol.

The sculpture will remain on permanent display in the Capitol Visitor Center.

I love Miss Cicely Tyson.

3. Soujourner Truth being honored is making me want to cry
I am beside myself with the joy of knowing she's been honored this way. She was as courageous as anyone can be. We're lucky a man chose to write down her words when she spoke at an all white church. I'm grateful to her on every level.

4. Everyone says how great Michelle looks in jewel tones
but she looks amazing in black, too. I was not a fan of the flared skirts when she started wearing them because I prefer her in more body conscious stuff, but I have come to like it them a great deal. That ensemble looks amazing on her.

26. Well, I think it's great that the black dress has splashes of other colors...
I think she can really pull off bright colors because of her complexion. As for the A-line dresses and skirts, I think they are the most flattering to curvy women. Form-fitting outfits are too revealing for that body type, IMO. Not that it looks bad in the least, but it's just not as elegant. Save the tight stuff for the disco!

14. Hillary Clinton, while a Senator, co-sponsored the legislation that put that statue there.
That's why she's there. Shiela Jackson Lee was the push on the House side.

We have not seen this sort of charismatic presence in the White House since Jack and Jackie. Plus, we are indeed the rainbow party, and we are coming into our own, all of us, men women people of color gay straight religious and non religious. I am starting to feel that sense of empowerment that was so palpable that November night so many months ago in Chicago. I'll disagree when my party and its leaders are wrong, and I'll do so publicly right here, but I can't help but feel good about what is happening and where we are going.

24. Too bad Sojourner's statue doesn't include her arms.
Her "Ain't I a Woman?" speech usually included baring one or both of her arms to show her muscles, as proof that she was as strong as a man. That's the image I always had of her in my head, ever since I learned about her as a child—a tall, confident woman, showing off her hard-earned muscles!

25. Obviously, being First Lady agrees with Michelle Obama. She is getting more beautiful
and her husband agrees as well. It is so great to have an obviously loving couple/family in the White House.
