Bachmann likely to face strong challenge in 2010

Rematch Possible for Bachmann in Minnesota

http://www.cqpolitics.com/wmspage.cfm?docID=news-000003111778&cpage=2

Two Democrats are ready to vie to take on Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann in a race that is almost sure to be one of 2010’s most expensive.

The Democrats’ 2008 nominee, Elwyn Tinklenberg, confirmed Wednesday that he will take another shot at the 6th District seat after losing to Bachmann, a Republican, by three percentage points. Physician Maureen Reed, the Independent Party’s 2006 candidate for lieutenant governor, also filed paperwork Wednesday to run for the Democratic nomination.

Tinklenberg, former mayor of Blaine, Minn., is hoping to revive the late surge of support his 2008 campaign received because of Bachmann’s call just before the election for an investigation into anti-American sentiment in Congress. Tinklenberg raised more than $1 million in the four days that followed, as liberals across the country rallied around him.

“If we’d had that kind of support just a little bit earlier I think we would have won,” he said.

For the next race, he said, “We’re starting at a whole different level this time,” with more name recognition and a donor base.

The district encompasses the northern suburbs of Minneapolis and St. Paul and is one of the most Republican-leaning in the state. Republican presidential candidate John McCain topped President Obama in the district with 53 percent of the vote.

Tinklenberg’s near-upset has also encouraged other Democrats to take a look at the race. Reed, for example, says she is not deterred by a contested primary nor the need to raise large amounts of money.

. . .

Bachmann won with 46 percent of the vote in 2008 to Tinlenberg’s 43 percent.

Independence candidate Bob Anderson drew 10 percent of the vote

3. You can donate
to the DFL 6th Congressional District as well. Directly to the candidate is fine but you won't know who the endorsed candidate will be for almost a year. The money we collect will be to defeat Bachmann AND support the endorsed candidate, i.e., more boots on the ground for better voter outreach, radio ads, etc.

8. If this doesn't deserve a Rec'd
and a huge Thank you to Tinklenberg..I don't know what does.

He lost by 3% points coming in without too much name recognition and now in 2010 he'll be back with bachmann having shown off her ugliest for two years.

There's republican and there's the batshit insane, bachmann.

18. And remember Bob Anderson - the guy who filed as the Independence Party candidate
(even though the Independence Party had also endorsed Tinklenberg) got 10% of the vote.

If the DFL wants to win that seat they need to endorse a candidate with a name like Anderson, Johnson, Peterson - anything with "son" on the end or many "quist". That's still good enough to pull in a lot of uninformed votes in that part of the state.

So it's kinda like running an Irish sounding candidate in Mass? :D

Here in Utah it's similar, though more Mormon sounding names like Ephram, Nephi, Pratt (surname), Young (surname) and Kimball (either surname or real name).

31. Yeah - a Scandanavian name still works here
Edited on Thu May-07-09 09:48 PM by dflprincess
Though in my family the Irish name works better - as long as there is a "DFL" after it.

Several years ago the Republican's candidate for Attorney General (I forget who it was, but he did have the right qualifications) was challenged by an absolute nut case (even the Republicans thought she was nuts) who crawled out of the woodwork and who was totally unsuited to the job. Her name was Sharon Anderson. She won. Though she won for two reasons 1) the Scandanavian name and 2) for a long time there was a local midday show hosted by a couple and the woman's name was Sharon Anderson (you can catch a clip of the show in "Fargo).

Fortunately, even running against that name, the DFL candidate won in November.

On the other hand, about the same time, the DFL's endorsed candidate for state Auditor was defeated by an unqualified woman named Carol Johnson - who lost in November to the Republican candidate who suddenly started using her maiden name, Anderson, on the ballot.

Maybe we do need literacy tests at the polls.

Since the Mormons heavily converted Danes. So you'll see Nielson, Anderson, Peterson and the like.

13. Bachmann' a complete idiot-She listens to pigman Limbaugh's lies each day then recites them as truth
Edited on Thu May-07-09 02:14 PM by LaPera
Everyone knows Limbaugh makes up shit and has for all the years he's been on the air...but this unbelievable stupid gullible clown Bachmann believes the pigman's lies as truth, and then she gets shot down each each and every time for reciting the bullshit publicly....

To show one how absolutely stupid Bachmann is....she just doesn't learn from her mistakes & distortions, she continues to repeat Limbaugh's and others bullshit as fact.

I suppose for Bachmann's fellow gullible republicans in her district it works, and/or she also wants to believe the lies as fact herself.

Bachmann is truly as stupidly ignorant as they come!

Her defeat will be particularly delicious.

34. Bachmann's voice is divisive and inflammatory and intemperate.
She seems to forge her opinions out of thin air and toilet water and then insists on spraying them onto the nation with the garden hose of her ego.

I gave some money to El Tinklenberg in his challenge to Bachmann this past cycle. He can count on me for another check for the next cycle with a view toward getting a toxic attention-seeking provocateur out of the 112th Congress.

Thanks for this post, grantcart. Recommended.
