Pat Buchanan: It's like if you use all this lingo from Harlem and put it on a test it's gonna be unfair to White Folks.

How is this NOT racist?

We don't speak English in Harlem? White Folks why are in you in Harlem...leave! You can't understand what we're saying, according to Pat Buchanan. Unless of course you took a class in Harlem lingo.:argh:

53. The history of this country is why it's wrong to say that.
Racists like Buchanan promote the ignorant stereotype of African-Americans being lazy and less educated. What he said perpetuates that stereotype and piles more insult onto centuries of repression.

55. So it's not okay to say a white person may have studied harder than a black person for a test
Edited on Fri May-08-09 12:18 AM by Cash_thatswhatiwant
due to the country's history...even if that's probably what happened? One of the men who took the test had a friggen MENTAL DISABILITY and probably studied rigorously for it. But because he's white and the person who failed the test is black, we're not allowed to say that??

80. Might be a reference to the guy who is suing. He talked about
the months he put in studying in part because of his learning disability and he really wanted to be eligible for promotion. A black coworker did the same thing. (and passed) Probably many studied though, sounded like it was pretty demanding.

The test is under seal though and I guess the point will be if the questions themselves might have cultural bias

But nothing changes the fact that pat buchanan is a bigot.

Edited on Sat May-09-09 10:55 AM by Cash_thatswhatiwant
and I don't believe saying that simply saying someone may have studied harder is racist, and you can't convince me of that. sorry.

The person had a learning disability who was white. He did everything he could, including getting help, in order to pass that test. Like someone said, a black woman PASSED the test. If it was so discriminatory towards all black people, how exactly did she pass????

Isn't it MORE racist to say that black people are straight up slow in certain test taking, than to say that two, equally capable people of different races probably studied to a different degree?

Like I said, we need to see the test to decide if it is really discriminatory or not. They should release the test and let us decide.

65. If there was a test where only black people passed Buchanan would be
flailing on the floor demanding a new test be made up because clearly something is wrong with the test that no white people passed it.

But when no black people pass it means that there's something wrong with every single black person who took the test.

And you don't see the racism in such an assertion? What are you fucking blind?

75. I need to see the test before I make any judgments on the test.
The naacp man was asserting that multiple choice questions were discriminatory against black people. Well, the african american female who was valedictorian at my school who got an A on every single multiple choice test didn't get that memo! So I find that argument SILLY.

I had no trouble in doing multiple choice and still as a student in college have no problem in it. I don't know anyone who feels that multiple choice is so much harder than anything else. I just find the whole argument that black people have some sort of automatic disability when it comes to test taking offensive imo; much more-so than someone saying that a white person may have studied harder and passed. Infact, saying that blacks are insufficient/slow in testing than all other races is MUCH more racist than saying two equally sufficient men of two different races may have studied differently and received different outcomes.

72. If I thought for a minute that Pat Buchanan would react this way if only black people passed this
test, I might not think his comment was racist. But I know - and I think that just about everyone else with a brain knows, as well - that if only black people passed this test and no white person made the cut, Buchanan would NEVER claim that this just meant the black guys studied harder and knew more. He would be screaming from pillar to post that this test was rigged.

Researchers at the University of Southern California say malnutrition in the first few years of life leads to antisocial and aggressive behavior throughout childhood and late adolescence. "These are the first findings to show that malnutrition in the early postnatal years is associated with behavior problems through age 17," said Jianghong Liu, lead author of the study which appears in the American Journal of Psychiatry. "Identifying the early risk factors for this behavior in childhood and adolescence is an important first step for developing successful prevention programs for adult violence," she said. For 14 years, researchers followed the nutritional, behavioral and cognitive development of more than 1,000 children who lived on Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa.

The children's intelligence level and cognitive ability were also tested, and social workers visited their homes to come up with a so-called adversity score that summarized factors such as the income, occupation, health, age and education levels of their parents and their overall living conditions. At ages 8, 11 and 17 years, the researchers looked at how the children were behaving in school and at home. Over time, a link became evident between malnourishment and antisocial or aggressive behavior, said Adrian Raine, a co-author of the study. Compared to those in the control group - the group that did not suffer from nutritional deficiencies - malnourished children showed a 41 percent increase in aggression at age 8 and a 51 percent increase in violent and antisocial behavior at age 17.

While social class did not play a significant factor in behavior, intelligence level did, Raine said. "Poor nutrition, characterized by zinc, iron, vitamin B and protein deficiencies, leads to low IQ, which leads to later antisocial behavior," he said. "These are all nutrients linked to brain development." Researchers also found that the more indicators of malnutrition there were, the greater the antisocial behavior. "There's more to antisocial behavior than nutrition, but we argue that it is an important missing link," Raine said. "Biology is not destiny. We can change the biological disposition to antisocial and aggressive behavior."

of doing well on tests? The white guys on some sort of academic test, and then he compared it to a race - where, of course, the black guys were all going to win.

My mouth was hanging open.

edited, because it's "he set up", not "you set up". Fingers moving faster than brain...

40. It's like that crazy guy who's a neighbor of your parents, you know?
And you just sort of avoid him at events because he's going to start spurting things like that...

43. Pat is Archie Bunker personified
racist, sexist, anti semite man...somehow gets on TV way too much and is coddled by media "liberals". MSNBC should have canned him a long time ago. They dropped Imus, yet Buchanan is ok?

49. You ever notice how sometimes Uncle Pat laughs at what he's saying....
.... because SOMETIMES he knows it's so crazy even HE cannot say it with a straight face?

I'm in sales .... which means I'm a BS artist by trade ..... and I can spot another one at 20 paces.

Pat Buchannan is one of the greatest living BS artists in the world today.

Dont let him frustrate you, he's just screwing with your head ... it's like a game to him I'm sure. ;)

51. Write MSNBC and tell them to get this piece of racist garbage off the air
Actually I rarely watch Tweety anyway. I don't know why MSNBC keeps giving this rightwing assholes airtime. They have their own network, let them go to Fox. We need a network that's free of crazy, racist, wingbat hate talk.

57. IMHO, Tweety was every bit as bad as Pat because he enabled it.
That's the worst I've ever seen Buchanan. The only thing he didn't do was put on his robe.

58. Has anyone heard what the heck was on that test....
that even led to this crap?

Last I heard the test itself was sealed. The discussions about this on M$M are outrageous, but I'm curious what led to this whole thing?

Someone here mentioned that they felt someone fed a lot of the applicants the answers ahead of time...mainly the white guys, giving them the advantage.

Is there seriously something that could have been on the test that was unfair in some way?

Color me clueless....sorry for my ignorance or if the question offends.

60. No, it's sealed. And we didn't get enough information from that so-called
"discussion" to know why the city gave such heavy weighting to this test as opposed to interviews, in comparison with other cities.

70. He went over the top years ago
Starting when he worked for Nixon, and continuing into the 80's, when he fondly referred to apartheid-era South Africa as "The Boer Republic". What did you expect from a man whose father taught his children to revere Francisco Franco in their house while growing up?

71. I don't think that's a racist comment.
To deny there are colloquoial (sp?) uses of English in different areas of the country is to deny reality.

There are expressions used in some southern states that are not used in yankee states.

There are differences in eating habits and other behaviors in different parts of the country.

AND there are differences in the way people speak locally, in different parts of the country.

Remember that argument a few years ago by some Af. Americans...they wanted ebonics recognized formally, taught in schools, etc.?

I've never been to Harlem, so I dont know specifically about that area. But in all other areas of the country I've been in...they speak locally in a way, however subtle, that no one else in the country speaks like.

76. I've been Pat-free for 14 months!
Daytime GE-TV too. It feels great to have Pat out of my system. I made sure to let msnbc know that I would be switching channels every time Pat appeared on my teevee. (They didn't care that I wouldn't watch...they gave him more airtime!) :argh:

Since I'm a Black woman from Harlem. This is added to the fact I'm ridiculously disappointed in Tweety. As can be seen by my sig and my avie I adore him. Normally he rips PB a new one for his old time racist ideology...but this time---not so much. It was frustrating and disappointing as hell that my favorite reporter just let PB get away with being a racist on air.

87. Pat is an across the board bigot
And I welcome you to the Buchanan Boycott! He's been this way for many years, and I simply do not watch anything with Pat. I see his face, I send an email. He's bigoted against black people, gay people, latino people, and that is really just the tip of the iceberg with him.
I am glad I missed his latest round of spewing. Let's all write letters about Pat! Please?!?

Also, I love your neighborhood.

So fuck Pat Buchanan.

88. In agreement that he really went over the top in that one...
several people made threads about it so it must've made a bad impression. I always thought it was there, he was just standing on his bigoted heart until the right opportunity to lash out. I can't believe MSNBC continues to send this idiot a paycheck.

90. What kills me the most is the fact that MSNBC doesn't take responsibility for this!
This was on their watch. At least Tweety to say something about how offensive it was to the audience to give that guy a damn platform to spew his shite. I give my time and loyalty to MSNBC out of all the MSM's and no one calls him out. Not a single person on MSNBC. KO doesn't call the bastard out and neither does RM, let alone Tweety.
