Dixie Kitchen, Hyde Park Restaurant Touted On TV By Obama, Closing
Posted: 05-20-09 08:15 PM

The Dixie Kitchen & Bait Shop, a staple of the Hyde Park restaurant scene that President Obama once touted on "Check, Please!", is closing in June, the Hyde Park Herald Reports.

Owner Carol Andresen told the Herald she was closing the restaurant after the University of Chicago, which owns the Harper Court shopping center, declined to renew her lease.

Andresen plans to recreate the bulk of Dixie Kitchen's top dishes, like jambalaya, gumbo, catfish and fried green tomatoes, at the nearby Calypso Cafe, which she also owns.

Calypso remains the lone holdout to the University of Chicago, which plans to redevelop the courtyard, Crain's Shia Kapos reports. All the other tenants, including the Hyde Park Animal Clinic, have left.

5. Watching this video is an amazing experience...
It's like uncovering some hidden amateur bootleg tape of Mr. POTUS.

7. Well, I'm just glad that the lower half of his head has finally grown in....
.... to match his rather large cranial cavity. He's looking a lot less egg-headish in recent years, poor thing.

3. Shoot. I liked that joint.
First thing - the food in Hyde Park is awful. It is not a dining hot spot.

Dixie Kitchen was an exception. I love southern food.

6. That's where I ate (and drank) my first years after college
in the 'real world!' Was a cute little place 2 blocks from my first apartment, on Harper. Had great Sunday brunches, where I ate and read paper, all alone. Restaurant has probably changed since then.
