2. Why do this on the same day as the CA SC Prop 8 announcement?
Personally, I would have waited until tomorrow.

5. My hope is that they can be seen as the same story.
Perhaps an advocate or a member of the GLBT community will be nominated for the bench.

15. The Prop 8 decision is national news, not just CA news. nt

25. But the SCOTUS pick is much more high-profile news. Not sure what you're point is?
Edited on Tue May-26-09 08:35 AM by ClarkUSA
It is possible for two news items to share the same day. This has always been considered the best week to announce the pick because Congress is home for the week on Memorial Day break.

29. My point was: it was rumored to announced later in the week.
Edited on Tue May-26-09 09:57 AM by Patsy Stone
Suzanne Malveaux just confirmed it was supposed to be later in the week, but Mubarak canceled due to a death in the family, so it was moved up to today.

The reason I asked was, if you want to control a news cycle, and you want a story to be front and center, it's odd media management to purposefully schedule it at the same time as another big story is going to break.

30. MSNBC has long said it was due anytime this week, the earlier the better for the WH.
Edited on Tue May-26-09 10:08 AM by ClarkUSA
I've been hearing on the news for a month now that he was going to announce this after Memorial Day, so perhaps Suzanne Malveaux isn't the best source for reliable "rumor".

9. That sure is interesting
Could be a double blow to progressives- could be the two matters on first impresion sort of "cancel out" -or it could end up a pretty decent day.

None of three would surprise me.

4. could Joe Scarborough be more of a ding dong?
Don't answer that, folks.

He is going on about how a Sotomayor pick would present "opportunities" to the Republicans because (according to him, and we know what a skewed frame he has), she has been "way out on the left" of some cases. But the jerk couldn't even remember Sotomayor's NAME and had to ask Mika what it was again before going off into his rant.

16. David Brooks said attacking Sotomayor would be (more) political idiocy for the Repugs...
They will not be able to stop her nomination and it will further alienate them from the critical block of hispanic voters. A "high tech (ethnic) lynching" ... of sorts.

11. yeah, I feel like this is more up in the air to me than the VP announcement.
(even though it is supposedly down to four).I figured it would be Biden for VP. I remember everyone here complaining about not getting their VP text, haha. Not sure about this one.

10. It will be Sotomayor...I think that Hillary and Schumer are going to sponsor her nomination
and this attention to NY may help Gillibrand in her battle with Pataki...

17. I wouldn't be surprised at all
Chuck Todd was saying that "conventional beltway wisdom" (and we know how worthless that is these days) has is down to her and Wood. And I'm sure if it's NOT Sotomayor, the press will go "OMG, WHAT DO HISPANICS THINK OF THIS SNUB??!", because they are stupid like that.

20. Sotomayor probably was vetted by Shrub since he was "considering" her
to replace Sandra Day O"Connor (we all know how that went on...Roberts and Alito)

24. he's such a cartoon
I thought that Sotomayor was less liberal than some of the others? Then again, Joe Scarborough laughed at Rachel Maddow when she claimed that the "most liberal senator" rating was always bogus. He knows nothing.

What comes around goes around.
