Republicans Will Not Fight Over Sotomayor
I'm not so sure. I don't trust those scumbuckets for nothing.

Republicans Will Not Fight Over Sotomayor

Top Senate Republican strategists tell Politico that, "barring unknown facts about Judge Sonia Sotomayor, the GOP plans no scorched-earth opposition to her confirmation as a Supreme Court justice."

Not a single senator has come out publicly in opposition to Sotomayor's confirmation.

Said one GOP aide: "The sentiment is overwhelming that the Senate should do due diligence but should not make a mountain out of a molehill. If there's no 'there' there, we shouldn't try to create one."

8. Aw c'mon!
I'm sure somebody on our side could, I don't know, try to "tempt" them? Seriously, though, I'm sure some of the ultra-conservative nutcases (i.e. Federalist Society) and/or the fundies will TRY to do SOMETHING. And then let's just see the Repukes try to shut them down!!!

2. They'd be stupid to oppose her.
She's not exactly the liberal activist judge some would love to have on the USSC, but she is a sound judge, which is more than I can say for a few of the USCJ sitting on the court right now.

3. They still look bad. The GOP leaders are all against her even if the senators are not.

4. I wonder if this would be their attitude if it was one of their justices retiring...
Sotomayor is replacing Souter.

Souter was a Republican appointed by President George H.W. Bush in 1990, largely on the recommendation of New Hampshire's former Gov. John Sununu, who had become the first President Bush's chief of staff.

But Souter surprised Bush and other Republicans by joining the court's more liberal wing.

He generally votes with Stevens and the two justices who were appointed by President Bill Clinton — making up the bloc of four more liberal members of the court, a group that has usually been in the minority throughout Souter's tenure.

NPR

So, in essence, a "liberal" judge is being replaced by a "liberal" judge, therefore, the "balance" is maintained and there's no need to expend "political capital." However, if Sotomayor is replacing a retiring Roberts, or Alito, or Scalia, or Thomas, then I'd expect fireworks...

10.  How the Repubs conduct themselves during the confirmation could have major long-term implications..
If they come off as attacking her for petty reasons claiming she is "unqualified" or an "affirmation action" nominee they could suffer a major political backlash for decades from Hispanics, women and others who feel she was unfairly attacked. This could be a major inflection point in politics in America. The GOP could lose the battle for the hearts and minds of Hispanic America and in so doing lose America. They know this and will likely keep it civil. On the other hand, right-wing hate talk show hosts will surely castigate her.
