Boehner: GOP Preparing Major Attack On Obama For Mirandizing Terrorists

Buried in this interview that John Boehner did with ABC News is a preview of the Next Big And Very Scary GOP National Security Attack: A full-scale assault on the White House for Mirandizing terrorists.

Boehner told ABC that national security was Obama’s Achilles heel, then added:

“I think most Americans will be appalled that we’re providing Miranda rights to terrorists,” Boehner predicted. “This thing is going to bubble up big.”

Boehner’s office confirms that’s the first time he’s made the charge, making this a kind of call to arms for the GOP and the right. The reference is to this report in the Weekly Standard, which said that Obama’s Justice Department has “quietly ordered FBI agents to read Miranda rights to high value detainees captured and held at U.S. detention facilities in Afghanistan.”

But is it true? A Justice Department spokesperson emailed us that while that there have been “specific cases in which FBI agents have Mirandized suspects overseas,” there has been “no policy change” and “no blanket instruction” to Mirandize detainees.

Interestingly, Boehner’s call to arms came after it emerged that no less a national security luminary than David Petraeus said he had “no concerns at all” about the Mirandizing of terrorists. Not even Petraeus’ word can dissuade Republicans from taking this tack.

This suggests, I think, an interesting new dynamic: The national security attacks coming from Republicans are opening up a bit of a schism between them and former allies in the Defense establishment who say such attacks are baseless. But more on this later.

2. This is rhetorical, I know, but what in the hell is wrong with these people?
Their desperation is beyond comedic, it's pathetic.

3. It's not "mirandizing terrorists"... it's mirandizing individuals suspected of being terrorists.
Big difference.

6. That is a HUGE difference...
Just as the right has successfully equated "muslim" with terrorist, they've equated "detainee" with terrorist.

No gray area for these people. Anyone swept up and detained is guilty. Period.

8. Indeed. The Republican brain is incapable of seeing "gray".
You are either a "bad guy" or "good guy". I guess we are bad guys to them.

10. Life is black or white to them. Literally. And, yes, we are definitely....
the enemy. We support diversity and see life has gray areas and is complex; they deplore diversity, and deplore critical thinking and reasoning. It's too "elite" for their taste. ;)

I've accepted that, when it gets down to the basics, we want two different worlds. It can't be reconciled.

4. Anything to take focus from Obama's successes, and appeal to TV audience with Fear.
Military personnel tend to support current admin, just the GOP portrayed deference as truthful gospel.

5. KO addressed this last night, and that it started in 2008....
And while we blow it off because we know the facts, the pattern is that a ludicrous charge is made in the media...it is repeated on hate radio/TV...and the challenges -- the truth -- never reach the audience. The lies are what stick.

And people believe they are getting news, the facts. For those of us over a certain age, we were conditioned to believe that, if someone said something repeatedly on TV or radio, it was true. The whole "truth in advertising" law we grew up believing in.

When the Internet came along, we saw how wrong we were. For those not online, they still believe what they hear.

This is why so many of us find hate radio/TV so dangerous. Well, one of them.

probably lots of factors, but I feel there are many here at DU who don't comprehend the fact that people really, really believe what they are hearing from Faux, Limbaugh, etc.

And not only the ones who are idiots and see/hear what they WANT to see/hear, but those we're discussing now...the group who believes that you can't lie on TV or radio and they are not online to get educated via more than one resource.

Ignorance is scary whether it's intentional or unintentional, but I do believe we should always be aware of it and not just say they're all idiots and they don't matter.

There are a LOT of people who fit this category. Even if it's a minority of the citizenry, the Faux/Limbaugh sheeple impact the rest of us because there are enough of them to do so, and the repugs are obviously still catering to them.

It affects us.

I don't know what to DO about it; I'm just saying we need to be aware of it.

And also be aware of the pervasive racism/bigotry in this country that many haven't experienced first hand and thus don't believe it's as widespread as it is.

7. Night before last...
a bunch of callers to the Alan Combs show (yeah, I suffer insomnia) had this talking point and were beating poor Alan up about it.

Of course, the wing nuts had the talking point down, so one of their pied pipers much have gotten the tpm on it.

Alan didn't have the factual come back that this was actually started in July, 2008 by then President Booosh.

19. Yeah
I thought Petraeus was another one of their "Saints" (right behind Raygun)? Guess even I was a bit wrong about him myself. He's actually turned out be a decent military leader- or at least a smart non-ideological one, anyway.
