Ahmadinejad, Rejecting Strife, Hints of Arrests
Ahmadinejad, Rejecting Strife, Hints of Arrests

By ROBERT F. WORTH and NAZILA FATHI
Published: June 14, 2009

TEHRAN —President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran on Sunday likened the protests disputing his election victory, the most intense disturbances in Tehran in a decade, as well as the possible arrests of his opponents to the passions of soccer.

Dozens of reformist politicians were said to have been arrested at their homes overnight, according to news reports on Sunday and a witness who worked with the politicians. There were also reports of politicians and clerics being placed under house arrest.

In a wide-ranging news conference with domestic and foreign correspondents, Mr. Ahmadinejad said that his re-election was “real and free” and accused foreign media of launching a “psychological war” against Iran.

When asked about the arrests of opposition leaders, Mr. Ahmadinejad did not answer directly but said those committing crimes deserved to be arrested.

“There will rule of law in this country and all the people are equal before the law,” he said. In a soccer match, he continued, “People may become excited and there may be confrontation between people and the police force. People who violate traffic violations will be fined by the police no matter who he is.”

Reuters quoted a judiciary spokesman on Sunday as saying that the reformists had not been arrested but had been summoned, “warned not to increase tension” and released.

Regarding the protests and alleged voting irregularities, the president told the journalists at the news conference: “Some believed they would win, and then they got angry. It has no legal credibility. It is like the passions after a football match. It is not important from my point of view.”

Some foreign journalists were apparently being told to leave the country. Nabil Khatib, executive news editor for Dubai-based news network Al Arabiya, told The A.P. that the station’s correspondent in Tehran was given a verbal order on Sunday from Iranian authorities that the office will be closed for one week.No reason was given for the order, but the station was warned several times Saturday that they need to be careful in reporting “chaos.”

Iran Elections (Sun. Jun 14)

By Anonyme - Iran/Tehran

Here a coup has happened, apparently even the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamaney also is under seizure of the group of Pasdaran doing the coup. Nationwide message of Khananey yesterday also is apparently fake or given under pressure; of course this is only a theory not proven but the fact is that current behavior has not been seen from the ruling regime in the past. No one does not believe the election result; in Turkish areas where Mousavi, at least due to ethnic inclinations could have the majority of the vote, based on the claimed results has not been able to do so. This is absolutely unbelievable! It is an absolute charade! To the world, Plz don't recognize Ahmadinejad as the elected president. This is the least help you can do for our nation’s democratic endeavor. So many people were injured last night...

FREEDOM IN IRAN

By Patrick Warner - USA

How can Iranbian press lay claim to their government being a democracy as web sites, instant, messsaging and cellular networks were shut down to stifle peaceful opposition? Would it not have been an opportune time for Iran to showcase itself as a so called democracy by permitting its citizenry to voice their opposition rather than to take to the streets violently and have the government violently crush the opposition? Laugh Out Loud--LOL, there is no democracy in Iran today. The road to democray was ignited. Now the civilized world must without question firmly with deeds and action support those yearning to break the yoke from those who strangle the breadth of freedom.
Liberté, égalité, fraternité,

Cheating in election

By Hossein - Iran, Tehran

The choice of Ahmadinejad absolutely was NOT the choice of people. It was the choice of REGIME and the LEADER.
We can not tolerate this situation anymore. We can not tolerate their lies anymore. The only thing we want is democracy. Is it a huge aspiration ??? Now, who will help us ? How should we battle from this dictatorship ?
We are exhausted from this situation. WE NEED CHANGE...

Say NO TO Mullas

By Anonyme - Dubai

The country is ruled with religious fundamentalist (Mullahs) who were brought into power more than 30 years ago; 30 years of injustice, lying, corruption, humulitaion of its citizen, with terrible human right violations such as no freedom of speech, blasphemy, apostasy, etc.

One would think how long it would go on specuially when this scenario has been already experienced in our history. We can hope for and imagine the possible scenarios of change forever in Iran. To those Iranian in Iran calling for their rights and freedom, I should tell them WE LOVE YOU AND WE STAND BY YOU. THE MULLAS ARE FAKE, SAVAGE, AND COLD BLOODED. It is not going to be an easy task to remove them, but it is under way quicker than you think.
