Polis to Obama: Repeal DOMA
Polis to Obama: Repeal DOMA
By Michelle Garcia

U.S. Representative Jared Polis urged the Obama Administration to give an explanation behind its recent decision to uphold a federal ban on gay marriage on June 12.

"I was shocked and disappointed to learn that President Obama chose to defend DOMA in federal court, especially given his campaign promise to call for a full repeal of DOMA," Polis said in a statement on Tuesday. "My sadness turned to outrage when I read the Justice Department’s brief that not only defended this hurtful law but seemed to embrace it. Comparing my loving relationship with my partner, Marlon, to incest was unconscionable coming from a president who has called for change."

The Department of Justice filed a brief on behalf of the Obama administration defending the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act from a federal lawsuit filed by a couple married in California.

Despite his request, Polis said no one from the administration has given a reply. Polis, a Colorado Democrat, said that similar moves might risk alienating the block of LGBT voters.

"President Obama needs to honor his promise to repeal this law and end its needlessly divisive and harmful impact on our nation," he added. "I again call on him to work with us in Congress to help pass legislation, ending this hateful and divisive law."

1. So I guess he's a lying blogger too, now...
:sarcasm: I hope everyone calls him and tells him he doesn't know how government works and he's reading the brief wrong.

2. Perhaps Mr. Polis would like to draft and introduce legislation.

15. A few months ago Polis talked about submitting an omnibus LGBT civil rights bill.
Of course, we have no clue as to the progress of that fleeting glimmer in his eye.

You have to admit, though, the Democratic Party is rudderless when it comes to leadership with LGBT equality.

9. Why shouldn't Obama lead on the issue? We want him to lead on healthcare, stimulus, budgets
those are all things which require Congress to pass legislation.

Why is it this one fucking issue that some of you keep trying to throw exclusively at COngress?

10. when they were enacting it no one had to "lead" them
they did and got clinton to sign it. now this bunch just needs to do it and let the president put up or shut up by signing or vetoing it.

12. who the hell cares what happened 13 years ago?
Obama is leading on a lot of stuff that got screwed up in the eighties, nineties and this decade. Why do gay issues get singled out here and thrown exclusively at Congress?

(actually I know why, but very few of you are honest enough to own it.)

11. Obama will. When he thinks the time is right politically. But for those
who can't wait, they should take steps themselves. Especially someone in Congress. Its amazing he's complaining when he's in a position himself to do something about it.

13. The way the brief was written would tend to speak otherwise
and the "right time" politically for courage is NOW.

14. Not when we're in the middle of one of the biggest fights we're going to see
Healthcare.

Until Obama says he's not going to repeal it, his promise hasn't been broken. I never heard him say, I'll tell the DOJ not to defend the law

16. Well they've got another one coming up the pike
the GLAD case, which is eight married couples in MASS suing the Federal Gov't. The DOJ is going to shortly have to figure out how to respond to that one.
And it's a far, far stronger case than Smelt.
