Watch CSPAN sometime if you don't already...it's sickening the amount of time taken up by congratulating sports teams, or passing resolutions like "Measure to Rename the 'Podunktown Post Office' to 'Wilbur J. Jones Post Office'". This is just another, pointless variation of that.

20. I disagree, voting present or not voting I think were acceptable ways of opposing it. |
|
The language is fucking ridiculous
That the House of Representatives-- (1) expresses its support for all Iranian citizens who embrace the values of freedom, human rights, civil liberties, and rule of law; (2) condemns the ongoing violence against demonstrators by the Government of Iran and pro-government militias, as well as the ongoing government suppression of independent electronic communication through interference with the Internet and cellphones; and (3) affirms the universality of individual rights and the importance of democratic and fair elections.
Voting no, you don't support those things would have been more brave, but I still thanked my representative for not voting.

I heard him say that. Obama DID speak out against the violence and in favor of having the will of the people heard, but he didn't go farther than that. And the House didn't say what McCain was saying-that the people should not have to live with 4 more years of Ahmadinejad. So I guess the RWers lost a talking point today with Gibbs' answer.

All kinds of people are opining about the situation in Iran. This measure doesn't do anything but express the Congress's viewpoint.

were claiming Obama's "confused" and "unwilling to speak up for the protestors" and making trouble, talking as if it's their right to force "liberty" on Iran.

Just expressing support for the Iranian people's desire to have their wishes and desires accepted by their country's leaders, and against any violence against the people by the ruling oligarchy.

33. They just managed to make Obama look really good for refusing to meddle! |
|
If they think this will hurt Obama they're sadly delusional. Arabs and Persians along with every other country will respect him more for refusing to ratchet up the incessantly bellicose rhetoric that Americans seem to love so much.
But I suspect they know this and are voting because they can't really condone violence in other countries. It's a 'safe' vote which is just symolic.
