Sunday Morning Shows Guest List - 6/21 |
|
CBS: FACE THE NATION John McCain - Republican
NBC: MEET THE PRESS Sam Nunn - Democrat Fred Thompson - Republican
ABC: THIS WEEK Chris Dodd - Democrat Lindsey Graham - Republican
FOX NEWS SUNDAY Pete Hoekstra - Republican Evan Bayh - Democrat John McCain - Republican Paul Ryan - Republican
Once again Republicans out number Dems, even if you factor out FOX. And the Dems featured can't be considered Liberals or Progressives either.
Plus Sam Nunn has been out of office for 12 years. How relevent is he? Fred Thompson has only been out of office for 6 years and was a candidate for President last year.
The MSM continues to let Republicans and Conservatives frame the debate. Imagine if John Kerry or Al Gore had done as many Sunday show interviews criticizing the President as McCain has.

The networks invite the guests who appear on these shows for the most part.

5. Of the three other shows, only Face the Nation with a McCain solo is unbalanced |

Both Nunn and Thompson is out of office, but a key issue in Iran relates to an area where Nunn is very well regarded - nuclear proliferation. Nunn is socially conservative and was especially bad on DADT but he was one of the foreign policy experts.
Dodd, who is a liberal (and likely the best friend of Kennedy) is equivalent to Graham - his biggest drawback is that he was never all that proficient on these talks shows - something that made me not consider him in 2007 even though he had a good liberal record. The question though is who would have been better. The Obama administration is carefully controlling what they say on Iran and they likely did want Biden, Rice or Clinton, who just had surgery on her elbow, out there - possibly pushed to say things they prefer not to say. Kerry was already high profile on this via a NYT op-ed and Hardball and Situation Room appearances. The fact is that even though the Republican gung ho message is the type that plays well even though it is wrong, Dodd did an ok job stating Obama's position.
