Ensign gets standing "O" after apologizing for being exposed as womanizing hypocrite.
Ensign apologizes to GOP senators
By: Manu Raju and John Bresnahan
June 23, 2009 02:25 PM EST

Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.), caught in the middle of a sex scandal, apologized to his Senate Republican colleagues during a closed-door luncheon, several senators said Tuesday.

Ensign made brief remarks, took no questions and was greeted by a round of applause.

Several senators said he was greeted warmly — and said there was no need for him to further dive into his extramarital affair if he chose not to.

"He expressed deep regret and it was sincere," said Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.).

Asked if Ensign needs to address the subject more fully, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said: "I think Sen. Ensign will address whatever needs to be said from here on."

Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) said Ensign "apologized to everyone who had been hurt, indicated that he had certain deficiencies in his own character and outlook and was going to make substantial improvements."

But Senate GOP leaders ducked questions about a potential Ethics Committe probe of Ensign, saying it was up to him to address that issue.

"It was a genuine, heartfelt sentiment," said Sen. John Thune (S.D.), who is expected to take over Ensign's post as chairman of the GOP Policy Committee later this week.

"He basically told us that he was sorry, and he's going to continue to do his job as a senator from Nevada."

A number of Republicans declined to discuss the Ensign scandal at all. For instance, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said she "was sorry for his family," but wouldn't comment further.

Ensign's home-state colleague, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who said he's known Ensign and his family for "many, many years" said he was rooting for Ensign to work things out on the personal front.

"I am concerned about his family, and I hope he works his way through this," he said, adding that he's "said all I've plan to say on Sen. Ensign today."

3. fuck that asshole. if he doesn't get up before the entire senate and apologize
if he doesn't get up before the entire state of Arizona and apologize, then he's a worthless piece of shit. Well, he probably is anyway. But there is now way he should be reelected because "he's sorry".

14. They tend to forgive their own pretty easily, quickly:
at least, that is, if he (or she) doesn't pick up any tolerance, humanity, etc, as a result of the experience.

17. Since His Staff Says He Was Extorted, Will They Report It To The FBI?
Extorting a US Senator is a felony. The affair ended a year ago, but Senator Ensign did not disclose the affair until he received demands for money from the woman's husband and a few hours after the woman's husband reported to the affair to Fox News.

The real question is why is Senator Ensign protecting a person who allegedly tried to extort him?
