I Just Maxed Out for Clark, and Next Week I'm Sending $100 to Kucinich
Edited on Thu Jan-08-04 07:09 PM by DoveTurnedHawk
I've committed to a fundraiser with Gert Clark, a "Comics for Clark" event here in Los Angeles, another Clark house party, and one other event which shall remain nameless.

Next week, I am going to start donating money to Dennis Kucinich, a man who I think really represents the "heart" of the Democratic Party, and who I have deep respect for. Even when he's gone after Clark a couple of times, I think he's done it for principled reasons.

Maybe Dennis will surprise us all, but even if he doesn't, his message is one that needs to be heard all the way through the primaries: he is providing a necessary, HONEST voice that TRULY represents the Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party.

Beyond that, I guess I'll have to live with it. :D Oh well, my absence will be someone else's gain, since all of these events have been selling out at that dollar amount!

As a Kucinich fan, I can't imagine why any of us would support someone like Dean, but the Dean team certainly hopes to get our 5%.

however, under close inspection......they are closer than say....Dean and Kucinich....that's for sure.

Clark and kucinich are not polar opposite! Remember Rock the VOte.....heck they almost looked like brothers.

I respect what you've done, both in boosting Dennis and in spreading the ZombyTroof about certain other candidates who shall remain nameless.

Man...if anyone saw us go at each other a few months ago, I'm sure they would find our current lovefest hard to believe. :D

The fact that you two have found a way to "kiss and make up" is an amazing, inspirational turn of events that ought to serve as an example of the way we all might actually pull the fuck together in the general election.

I'm pretty blown away over here. We might get out of this primary season alive, after all. :-)

I have long maintained that with all the present acrimony, this too, shall pass. I have been a political junkie for a long time, and I regret personalizing that which should have remained business (uh oh, smells vaguely like 'The Godfather'!). It takes work to put aside the emotions tied to a candidate and remain objective and cordial - but it CAN be done. Grudges CANNOT be held onto if peace is to prevail.

It is my hope that everyone on DU who has been at odds, for whatever reason - primaries or favorite baseball teams ;-) - buries the hatchet in a bucket of concrete, and dumps it out into the middle of the ocean to be forgotten forever.

Now, I'll have that beer! :toast:  :yourock:

DTH - first of all, you ROCK for spreading the wealth around. Your generosity is a beautiful thing to see, and I think it goes quite well with your overall tone of unity. It IS possible to support one candidate without tearing down all the others.

As for the creeps who couldn't resist trashing you for it--I'll paraphrase Jesus be saying that, verily, they have their reward.

46. Thank You, DTH, For Putting Your Money Where Your Mouth Is!!
And special thanks for supporting my fellow Buckeye, Dennis Kucinich!!

I'm close to maxing out on Clark (is it $2,000 per candidate, or $2,000 total?), and would like very much to follow your example with the rest of my Dem candidates donation budget. I'm leaning Kucinich, with Edwards a close second (the Hugh Shelton thing threw me for a loop, but he was my early candidate-of-choice, and a big smooshy soft spot remains within my heart for the defender of the working person, and gentle Senator from North Carolina!).

Timing is to be considered, too... if there's a real potential to max out, am I better off holding my donations until near the end, when the candidate really, really needs a boost? Or do I go all-or-nuthin'?

:-)

Again, thanks for sharing your generosity and good news, DTH!!

- JenJen :-)

And I am not just helping you because you are leaning toward DK either. ;-)

My research repeatedly says that the $2000 limit from an individual is per candidate, and then per campaign. The primary and general election campaigns are separate and you can start new donations when the primaries are over and the nominee is chosen and running for the general.

But here is a chart for more info:

47. Kudos for the contributions, but I have a slight issue with your statement
that Kucinich represents "the "heart" of the Democratic Party".

I completely agree that Dennis has a message that needs to be heard, but he's CLEARLY to the far left of the Democratic Party. If your definition of a "Democrat" is a far-left liberal, then, I guess that works. My definition tends to be slightly more center-driven...

51. While I haven't chosen a candidate - or maxed out... I have donated to
four different campaigns. I haven't read all the posts on this thread - a cursory glance showed some discussions going in other ways.

I believe very much that there are different voices in this campaign that have contributions to the overall dialogue that are important - even if those candidates do not end up with the nomination. One of those I have donated to - is Kucinich - for much the same reasons that you have stated. I believe he speaks to democratic ideals - that have become less mainstream than there were a number of years ago. He is now perceived more radical - while 20 years ago he would have just seemed a bit left leaning of the mainstream. If he does decently in some of the primaries it will go a long way towards ending the complete marginalization - even within congress of folks like the late Senator Wellstone. That is important.

I have recently been tempted to give to yet another candidate - for similar reasons (wanting the voice to stay in a while longer).

I have been impressed that compared to the runup to the 2002 midterms - there have been more liberal voices. And the large field has forced the media to cover those voices. Three months ago, I ran across few folks around here who knew who any of the candidates were; that has changed significantly. I am in a late primary state - and have lived here during other elections - and there was not this level of awareness in the past. While the corporate media is not our friend - it has been forced to give us some coverage. That has led to more people having at least a passing awareness of the candidates and issues. This is good.

Good on you for this decision - and I hope that others see beyond the candidate wars and can get the point that you are making. It is a good one.
