Damn! Our president just said, "We draw strength from our African heritage" |
|
Everytime I think I've gotten used to all of this, something else happens that makes me just say, "Damn!"
"You can do that. Yes, you can!"
Damn.

1. Harumph. What about those of us who draw strength from Scottish heritage and Bailey's Sloppish Ale? |
|
I guess that wouldn't play well in Ghana.

3. Who said it has to be either/or |
|
We have long praised our nation's European heritage, nothing wrong with that. It's just nice to have our African heritage acknowledged at long last by the President of the United States.
But if you have a problem with that, well . . .

your confusion was completely justified. Hopefully Buzz will forgive you. :)
I think all of us with melanin and even alot of DUers without melanin have been shocked, saddened and disgusted by some of the things that have been posted here lately.

15. Don't we all get to share in all of them? |
|
Maybe it's because I come from a long line of Eastern European Jews without even a hint of anything else to break up the monotony -- but from the time I was in my teens, I've secretly believed that simply being human gives me the right to everybody else's heritage by adoption.
So, yes, I do draw strength from my share in the African heritage that is all of ours -- its resiliency and cultural variety, its brilliance in music and public speaking, its deep sense of the spiritual power that is inherent in all things, its 8000 generations of accumulated wisdom.
Whatever we as humans have done once, we can do again. Whatever we have survived in the past, we can survive now. Whatever lessons we have learned and then forgotten, we can be reminded of by those who still remember.
And that is a source of strength for all of us.

Not everyone knows, cares or understands the genetic research completed a couple of years ago. We are all one and originated from Africa.
I found the genetic research documentary absolutely fascinating.

Why not focus on the present? For all of us. Here and now.
Like the President himself has said, it's "We need to look forward".
Unless there's a context I am unaware of, of course.

we are all one. For centuries, Africa has been exploited, its inhabitants denigrated by Europeans and European descendants. When one realizes the first steps of homonids were likely in Africa, and the most giant leaps in evolution took place there or near there, it shows the strength of Africa goes back far into history.

25. Case and point: the historical myth that Egypt is not really in Africa |
|
but in the "Middle East.". Natives of Egypt aren't African, but "Egyptian."
The unquestionable, uneraseable and undeniable proof of African brilliance and innovation that Egypt offered (the pyramids, embalming, pharaohs, etc.) Made it necessary to annex Egypt and convince people that it was not African.
Why? Because it impossible to enslave and denigrate for long people who know they are majestic and beautiful descendants of kings and queens whose civilization was centuries ahead of that of the ancestors of their captors.

22. The history of the United States would be VASTLY |
|
different without the presence of the slaves. Would there even BE a US without the slaves? Who would have worked the fields? Would there have been a Civil War? Would we have had the Civil Rights movement? That's just the political arena - can you imagine our culture without the rich diversity that the African influence brought to the US?
Yes, we, as a nation, DO draw strength from our African heritage. To say otherwise is just denial.
