Poll: Obama's Popularity Lifts U.S. Global Image

" The verdict is in: President Barack Obama is popular around the world and improving the U.S.'s global image .

A Pew Research Poll released today shows that the image of the United States has "improved markedly in most parts of the world," largely because of the high levels of global confidence and trust in Obama. Improvements were especially high in Western Europe, but attitudes toward America also warmed in Canada, Mexico, Argentina and urban populations in Brazil, India and China. Nearly 27,000 interviews were conducted in 24 nations, as well as the Palestinian territories.

"His personal popularity and new respect for the U.S. having elected him translates positively for the U.S. image," former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said today, speaking on a Washington, D.C., panel with Pew Research Center president Andrew Kohut and former U.N. Ambassador John Danforth, who's also a former GOP senator from Missouri. "

snip: "The survey, conducted by the non-partisan Pew Research Center's Global Attitudes Project, showed that favorable ratings for both the nation and Americans have soared in Western Europe. In Germany, favorable opinion of the United States more than doubled, from 31 percent in 2008 to 64 percent in 2009."

"There were "signs of improvement" in predominantly Muslim countries that held overwhelming negative views of the United States during the George W. Bush administration. "

9. I can actually imagine that quite easily - having lived half my life abroad
Edited on Fri Jul-24-09 05:46 AM by Douglas Carpenter
First of all, many, probably most Canadians tend to want to quickly distinguish themselves from Americans from the United States. Of course, much of that is simply patriotism toward Canada. But also, many Canadians were well aware of America's unpopularity in the world and didn't want to become victims of confrontation.

Secondly, even Americans frequently recognized that to be identified as American, especially when one really was, can mean being quickly associated with a very unpopular American government even if they were a polite and decent person who strongly opposed that government's policies.

Also, for people who were neither Canadian nor American, the Canadian decal or flag simply identified to much of the world - a country that had much of the dynamism and excitement of America - but was still a country that sought to be at peace with the world and supported a more socially just society at home.

Suddenly for the first time in my adult life, because of President Obama, America is seen by most of the world as a country that seeks peace in the world and a more just society at home.

11. Of course the Muslims see "signs of improvement"; because Obama wants the US to surrender to them.

seen it covered on the teevee, doesn't mean it didn't happen, but I haven't seen it. Rec'd.
