I think I'm on an island here re: Rather and the memos

There is another shoe that has to drop - it has to.

Rather is a seasoned journalist - he has to have some type of Bartlett/Burkett connection that he wants exposed.

He has seen the Bush behavior before - he's seen Rove's slimy MO before. Knowing what he does I can't believe the story has no legs.

I just don't believe he would take the memos at face value - their content (note:content) must have been (or is) needed to connect the dots to an even larger scandal.

Call me crazy, but "third rate burglary" keeps running through my head. Not that this is of that magnitude, mind you, but giant oaks from little acorns grow.

1. I hope so... rather is certainly motivated, not to let this go if he can
find the smoking gun....

2. I agree wtih you.
Rather is a seasoned journalist, has to know that anyone that dares to expose Bush is turned on and slimed. I keep hoping that there is mnore, much more to this story.

11. I'm with DBear and you, Notasheep...
I think there's More To Come. Wouldn't it be great if Dan Rather & CBS were the ones playing Bushco like a violin?

Another DU'er had it right. Saying the CBS apology was for the MANNER in which they broke the story without verifying the SOURCE of the memos. Story's still good, memo contents still good. My hope is that they are using this a jumping off point for all the other documents that are out there which are a matter of public record, on *'s happy little sojourn in the Guard, that he had the temerity to say he's so proud of...

3. CBS says it was the producer that interviewed
Burkett the first go round. I believe she will be the scapegoat.

And I think CBS and Rather have lost this one. And they didn't help us any either.

4. Don't know
Clearly, Rather got the story right (as the NYT is finally figuring out). Plus, the Barnes bit didn't depend on memos. And the secretary corroborated the content of the memos. On the other hand, this is pretty embarrassing for Rather.

5. I hope so.
I'm looking for anyone to uncover anything that will finally nail BushCo to the wall. They have to have slipped up somewhere, they've done too many criminal things not to have left some hard evidence somewhere.

6. LET IT GO
Memos or no memos this election will not turn on Bush's guard service. Kerry took his campaign around the corner today, and it's time we all followed him...with enthusiasm and without any more damned distractions.

26. Yep, they were. But I doubt the media will let us...
...get to the bottom of it. It's become increasingly clear that the media is in shrub's pocket. Even if CBS comes up with the whole story, the other networks will cry foul.

8. My question from early on was....did they
know of Mrs. Knox from the start? If so, why not just interview her and forget all the crappy documents?? I mean, they could have just interviewed her as Killian's former secretary and let it go at that....

BTW....did you know that my old high school nemesis, Peggy Noonan, once worked for CBS/Rather, just before she went to work for Reagan???

Just threw that tidbit in there for the hell of it...but it IS true....you have to wonder sometimes if some of the people working under professionals like Rather could have other loyalties....

I get tired of people going into memo posts and telling everyone to "get over it and move on." (see my post re: Reading Between the Lines of CBS Statement)

I think there is much, much more here.

13. Why are the media focusing on the memos and

Butthead the freeper's spin on them? Why are they not looking at the fact that the White House put forth no argument against CBS using the memos, Dan Bartlett indicated they were the real thing?

Why are they not looking at Ben Barnes going on CBS to say "I got George W Bush in TANG as a favor?

Why are they not looking at Killian's secretary saying "This was the sort of thing Killian was saying about George W. Bush after he skipped out on his physical and his Guard duty"?

Why are they not demanding to know why Bush* can't produce his DD-214 (final discharge paper) to show that he got the honorable discharge he claims to have gotten?

Why are they not focusing on the months when Bush* did no Guard duty? The fact that no one will say he was in the unit in Alabama?

14. Probably a really dumb question but
could the memos have been scanned and printed, what would that do, and does it even matter?

Remember, I said it probably is a really dumb question.

15. People have been dreaming for over a week and a half now
that Dan Rather has something up his sleeve. The statements from today clearly show that he doesn't have anything else. The story was a mistake and the truth surrounding who created/planted the documents is either never going to be known or it's probably going to come out long after election day.

Sorry but the endless optimism here about these memos reminds me of *'s endless optimism on Iraq.

23. You're not alone (repost)
It's just a vibe I'm getting. I hope I'm right.

CBS's retraction on the authenticity of the memo is rather curious for two reasons.

1. Burkett is being interviewed for tonight's CBS Evening News. Says the AP report about the revelation,

"CBS said Burkett acknowledged he provided the documents and said he deliberately misled a CBS producer, giving her a false account of their origin to protect a promise of confidentiality to a source."

Hmmm.

2. The other interesting angle on this is that CBS has chosen the single most damaging point in the news cycle to make this announcement. Why?

Andy Heyward isn't stupid. CBS's attorneys and PR office weren't born yesterday. If you have some this embarrassing to reveal, you do what the White House does: you dump it on a late Friday afternoon, and the story dies a quiet, whimpering death on the Sunday morning news shows. By making this retraction on a Monday morning, CBS has essentially guaranteed that this story is going to be teed up for the next two days, if not the ENTIRE FUCKING WEEK. (This, of course, sure as hell doesn't help Kerry's visibility).

So why would CBS choose THIS DAY, of all the days in the week, to admit their error?

My guess: THERE'S MORE TO THIS STORY.

Think good thoughts, people.

for the WH to release ALL the docs on Bush's TANG service by order of a Judge on the AP FOIA suit. Anything that comes out can't be screamed as forgeries,

29. That's what I heard and understood:
"CBS said Burkett acknowledged he provided the documents and said he deliberately misled a CBS producer, giving her a false account of their origin to protect a promise of confidentiality to a source."

I actually heard Burkett say that!

Burkett also said that the memos were not forgeries.

There's more to this story. Rather knows it and it will eventually come out. I think with Rather coming forward and saying he was misled is just getting the RWers off his back. His investigation will continue until he has the evidence he needs to expose the chimp's lies.

though I want to let it go I can't. After doing some searching today on past Rove activities and living in Texas while Bush was governor, I just keep getting this knawing feeling, that won't go away.

http://calpundit.com/archives/003249.html

has a great interview with calpundit and Burkett. In this interview he is much more forthright and sounds more naive' than crazy.

32. I'm hoping ....
... but am not sure at this point if that might be wishful thinking. We'll just have to wait and see.

But one thing I'm certain of right now, the idea that this little messup is going to "sink CBS, they've lost their credibility", "Rather is toast", etc - cracks me up!. This is small potatoes folks, and isn't going to have any lasting impact of any kind.
