Son of UNLV legendary coach Jerry Tarkanian to run against Harry Reid...
Edited on Thu Aug-13-09 02:46 PM by cascadiance
Sometimes a popular name is what's needed to win against an incumbent and to get noticed. And perhaps Tarkanian's record of losses is a sign that the Republicans have little to offer other than trying to get a publicly known "name" elected into office.

Danny Tarkanian was a basketball star, and a son of the legendary coach Jerry Tarkanian. And he'll no doubt have a lot of support from the Armenian community who also often works hard to put their own in political power and at times are less concerned which side of the political aisle they are on in so doing.

What's the thoughts here, does he have a shot or not? It will be interesting to see how the developing plot of Ensign might affect this campaign as well. And also how the Dems might be feeling about Reid too, who increasingly seems to be more of a problem rather than an asset from many points of view within the party. Don't know if there's enough for a primary challenge, but certainly there might be less enthusiasm to campaign for him then.

Danny Tarkanian, a one-time UNLV basketball player and son of the Rebels' legendary longtime coach Jerry Tarkanian, has announced he'll run for the U.S. Senate seat occupied by Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Tarkanian http://204.119.249.46/danny/">launched a Web site with biography information and is soliciting money for the campaign.

"Danny Tarkanian’s political philosophy is based on constitutional conservatism and liberty," his bio says. "He believes in limited government and opposes the government takeover of private sector industries. He believes in a smaller government that – with some occasional help – leaves the average person free to achieve his or her ambitions."

Tarkanian, who runs a real estate business and a basketball camp, is a two-time electoral loser. He was beaten in a state Senate race and, most recently, in a race for Secretary of State in 2006 to Ross Miller.

Tarkanian, a Republican who says he believes in small government and personal freedom, is fresh off a court victory after suing state Sen. Mike Schneider for defamation after claims Schneider made during their state Senate race.

1. All the GOP has are the celeberity candidates.
Schwartzenneger, anyone? They even tried to convince Gary Sinise to run for office.

4. Not me, but I still can't understand how wingers and others feel...
And if Reid is getting a lot of *deserved* flak for his lack of leadership in the Senate, it might just make him that much more vulnerable if the left doesn't work that hard for him to get reelected.
