Curbing politicization...
For the past 40 years we have had an on-going politicization of just about every issue. It has gone on so long that perhaps as much as 50% of Americans are unaware of any other way of addressing the governments roles in our lives. Politicization is not the same thing as politics but something else entirely,it seeks power and not solutions. It is most easily seen in the Bush administration's firing of U.S. Attorneys for not prosecuting Democrats to the benefit of the Republicans.
It is my belief that President Obama is and has been trying to curb politicization by leaving legislative tasks to the Congress. The Health Care Reform debate may also be part of this effort. Right now the American people are engaged in the issue, as it should be in a democracy. But I do fear that as in all real efforts to deal with issues as momentous and potentially life altering as health care the forces of opposition contain quite a few opportunists and authoritarians. These people are generally sociopaths who have no qualms in disrupting us while they reap the benefits. We however are driven by principles and ethics they do not ascribe to and that is where our weaknesses are.
President Obama seems to understand this and is like a rock in a raging sea against which the waves crash but it does not waver itself. The talking heads, insane and scary pundits and their ilk are wearing themselves out which makes them even more furious. They are dangerous there is no doubt about that but that does not mean they will prevail. We must stand with and support President Obama and at the same time encourage him in de-politicizing our country's discourse. It is our history to write not theirs and that is what scares them.
