A progressive website’s review of Congress’ work this year shows Sen. Kay Hagan to be the most conservative freshman Democrat in the Senate – and the third most conservative Democrat overall – when it comes to casting votes crucial to progressive causes.
The site Progressive Punch, tracked votes on issues such as health care, human rights, the environment and education. The site showed that Hagan voted with liberals 56.5 percent of the time on “crucial votes.” Those are the votes that, the site said, progressives either lost or won narrowly and needed every vote they could get.
Among Democrats, only Sens. Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania scored lower. The site also reports Hagan voting much more conservatively than the general voting population of North Carolina, which the site labels a swing state. It gave Hagan one star, the lowest score possible, on a scale of up to five.
Republican Sen. Richard Burr, by the way, voted with progressives 2.9 percent of the time on “crucial votes.” He, too, received one star.
