Debate fantasy thread: What would you like to see happen in the debates?
I was a Dean supporter in the primaries, and one reason it took me so friggin' long to get on board the Kerry train was the memory of the way he dealt with Dean in one of the late debates on a question about Dean's positions I can't even remember. I believe it had to do with trade or taxes, and Kerry was a total asshole--humorless, stern, impatient, unrelenting--as he tried to force Dean to answer his question. It was the image of him being a bit of a bully but--I had to admit--fearlessly pursuing what he had to do, without regard to the niceties of public discourse, that I am thinking about now. The fact is, I was impressed with his command of the situation. I hated him, but I was impressed almost against my will.

Now I wouldn't want the average debate viewer to come away with the repulsion I felt at that moment, of course. I would want them to come away with the impression that they had just witnessed a commander taking a subordinate to task. I would want them to hold that image of the relationship in mind as election day drew nearer.

One other fantasy I have: I'd love it if Kerry were to get into something with Bush over how safe the US really is, and try to lead him into the trap of claiming that we're safer because the terrorists are engaging with us in Iraq not here. It wouild be interesting if Kerry asked Bush point blank, does he believe there will be another terrorist attack in the United States. If Bush says yes, Kerry has him on record as saying no one will keep us safe. If he says no, then Kerry can corner him into the "flypaper" (terrorists are too busy in Iraq to attack us here) trap.

1. I would like to see John Edwards
flashing that cheeky smile at Dick Cheney whilst gutting him on his record with lots of pleases" and thank yous and "with all do respect to my good friend", and cheney getting redder and redder until he lets out a stream of invectives and his head explodes.

that's my favorite fantasy.

8. Yes, & Edwards should interject the word "Halliburton" as much as he can.
Edited on Mon Sep-20-04 02:17 PM by 4_year_nightmare
That was the subject that evoked Cheney to lash out an unprecedented "f*ck you" on the Senate floor to Sen. Leahy.

13. *lol* he should keep cutting him off with that....
"did that happen at Halliburton Sir?"

"is that why you awarded halliburton that contract sir?"

"and halliburton figures where in this sir?"

ad nauseum...

3. I'd like KERRY to fire a series of HYPOTHETICALS at Bush
"What would you do FIRST, Mr. President if you were told ON THIS STAGE RIGHT NOW that our intelligence community has confirmation of three DIRTY NUKE BOMB ATTACKS to take place within the next 8 hours...AND... THAT there's MORE BAD NEWS: Both your mother and Father have been kidnapped by terrorists and are being held in an undisclosed location?"

If Bush refuses to take the bait... KERRY SAYS, "Don't you think a man who purports to have qualifications to be PRESIDENT should be able to handle difficult problems like these?"

ETC..

10. I'd like to see the freaking press report what I see...
...that the incompetent f*** can't even put a sentence together and that he looks like an utter moron while he listens to his earphone going "uh uh uh stay the course ... uh uh "

Supposedly intelligent reporters who can sit there and comment like the guy was even CAPABLE of coherent speech are what really piss me off.

12. For the Edwards/Cheney debate...
...I'd love to see Cheney get his ass handed to him on national TV. Since my birthday is the same date as their debate (10/5), it would be an awesome birthday present. ;)

For Kerry-Bush, it'd be sweet to have Kerry make Bush wet his pants (literally, but I'd settle for figuratively) on TV for the world to see. Kerry should bring up the economy, the Iraq quagmire, Enron, Halliburton, et al., as often as possible.

Oh, and it'd be nice to see the moderators actually point out, "But Mr. President, I think I speak for the nation when I say that I didn't hear an actual answer in there anywhere." There where a bunch of times in the debates leading up to (S)election 2000 when Bush's "answers" rambled on and on and never actually addressed the question that had been asked. He would just babble (Blah, blah, compassionate conservatism, blah, blah, you get to keep more of your own money, blah, blah, I know how hard it is to put food on your family, blah, blah, Ah'm gonna restore honorificness and dignitude to that there White House) until the clock ran out. Naturally the media thought he'd done a sterling job.

14. He is what I want to see:
Bush tells Kerry that "you are a very valuable Senator and I would like to see you back in the Senate serving your state after this election."

To which John Kerry says: "Mr. Bush, I would like you to go back to the Alabama Air National Guard so that you can finish your duty in Iraq after this election."

:)

Edited on Mon Sep-20-04 03:22 PM by ClassWarrior
Screw the rules of the debates. Go after The Excuse pResident like the skilled prosecuter Kerry is. Make Bush* blow a gasket. He won't see it coming.

And when the RepubliCONs whine about Kerry breaking the rules, Kerry should say, "Just more excuses for not answering to the American people!"

They're counting on Kerry to be civil. Screw 'em.

23.

Or maybe not. It's not original, and some will accuse him of politicizing a dead person.

23. I'd love to see Bush's head just explode
Barring that, I'd like to see Kerry be relentless. I'd like to see Bush lose his cool and walk off or start swearing, like at that one news conference where he completely flipped and stormed off-stage. I know they're going to up his meds and make him repeat the same tired lines over and over again, but the debates would be a GREAT time for a psychotic break. I know one is coming, I want to be watching when it happens.

Honestly, between the loyalty oaths, hand-picked rally atendees, and lack of real press conferences, it's been a loooooooooooooooong time since Bush was forced to answer a real question instead of "how does your faith influence your deliberations on war?" If Kerry doesn't back down, he could use Bush's lack of practice to his advantage.

25. I'd like to see JK ask * point blank the following 3 questions:
Why did you not want your answers to the 9/11 Commission recorded?

Why were you unwilling to testify under oath to the 9/11 Commission?

Why, after receiving in August 2001 a PDB entitled "Bin Laden determined to strike in the U.S." did you take no actions to forestall the threat?

I hope Kerry is as relentless as you describe him in the Dean debate. I want him to throw down. I want him to be a freaking bulldog. Please oh please let him tear Bush to pieces. It would be fantastic.
