9. I think it is a good idea
for Kerry to go on this silly show. Dr. Phil seems to be very popular with a large group of people and I would expect most of them vote. The audience seems to me to lean to the right and this is a good oppportunity for Kerry to get a chance to speak to them and I can't see Dr. Phil being a threat to Kerry by getting in his face.

10. Dr. Phil a Kerry supporter?
Hi everyone, new poster here. Hope I am doing this correctly.

How do you know that Dr. Phil is a Bush supporter. I thought he was a Kerry supporter?

36. What Kerry says
"Earlier yesterday, Kerry and his wife went to the Four Seasons Hotel to tape a 30-minute segment for the "Dr. Phil" television talk show hosted by Dr. Phil McGraw, who was joined by his wife, Robin. "It was fun to be with a prominent Texan who tells the truth," Kerry said of McGraw. "

I hope the editing doesn't get him.

free time on a TV show with a big audience = dumb not to take. :)

Also, they are going to talk about family stuff, not politics.

25. Are you sure ? (m)
I don't know one way or the other. He said something in a show that puzzled me.

He said that people shouldn't organize protests against the war because it hurts soldiers fighting in the war. Which sounds very right wing.

BUT then he said in the same show that he is personally opposed to the war, he just doens't believe that morally people shouldn't actively demonstrate.

It isn't a very logical position at all . . . I mean if they are fighting to protect our rights, one of those rights they're fighting to protect is our right to assemble and protest.

Anyway, I came away from that episode absolutely puzzled about what his political stance is.

8. Here's an excerpt:
Kerry to Appear on Letterman, Dr. Phil
By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Voters who want to catch Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry in the next few weeks won't even have to take off their fuzzy slippers.

Kerry is making the rounds of popular and decidedly nonpolitical television with upcoming interviews on "Dr. Phil," "Live with Regis and Kelly" and "The Late Show with David Letterman."

"Obviously, we're reaching out to people who might not be paying attention just to nightly news," said Kerry spokeswoman Allison Dobson. "It's part of the introduction of John Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry and who they are and what they are about, just as people."

Kerry's interview with Dr. Phil McGraw will be taped Saturday morning in Boston. Both their wives also will participate in the show, which the campaign said will focus on how Kerry and Heinz Kerry raised their children and how they are affected by the lessons they learned from their parents.

39. this is awesome
:bounce: Compare the way Kerry raised his two daughters to the Bush twins and he will knock it out of the ballpark. I saw a clip of Dr. Phil's show with Bush and he shows the picture of Jenna with her tongue sticking out and Dr. Phil asks Bush, "have you talked to her about this"? hahahahaha!

Next stop, Judge Judy!! Is Dr. Phill going to teach Kerry how to love and respect himself and stop turning to sweets to solve his marital problems. Dr. Phill is a joke.

7. ratings, that's why.
Plus, Dr. Phil is known as a plain talkin' dude.

So if Kerry can get on there and plain talk with the plain talking dude, he comes out looking good.

I personally think it's a bad idea.

Look, the media is going to be all over this. They will accuse Kerry of dodging the media again. Bush is going to be on the O'Reilly Factor sometime next week. Let us wait and see what bloppers he will come up with.

11. * & Pickles have an interview on Dr. Phil that is to be
aired (or maybe it already has, I don't watch the show). Candidates go on television talk shows because of the viewers - Dr. Phil is a very popular show.

It may be that the campaign sees it as a way to reach those common folks that would like to have a beer with *.

Just because the show isn't your cup of tea doesn't make it bad, what are you some elitist snob (which is what some try to depict Kerry as)?

12. Good move , actually!

I've been critical of the campaign but this is good. He needs to vary his mode of presentation. I see virtually the same sound bite every single day and the same staging. Kerry at or near the podium with mike in hand, finger-pointing or gesturing somewhat awkwardly. Content is 1-3 sentences... almost always borderline-shrill in tone.
Town-hall format( isn't this getting a little old, BTW?) with "ordinary" folks, various levels of enthusiasm, lined up in back, like so many extras.

Talk show circuit can help lighten-up his image. ( Bush has an advantage in this area: "charm".)

It's not enough to be smarter, more honorable, and be right on the issues. People, especially "undecideds" ... who are by definition not politically savvy or not interested... are more likely to vote for someone they "like", someone who exudes warmth and a degree of humor than someone who does not.

Kerry has these qualities but they are not communicated in shrill, 15 second soundbites.

Smart move by handlers.

Paul

20. Yup..
I think Kerry should hit all of the big comedy shows. A sketch on SNL, a walk-on on Conan during a skit, a fake news report on 'The Daily Show.'

My theory: when you can get people to laugh with you, they get more comfortable with you. And when they're more comfortable with you, they're more likely to vote for you. (just make sure that they're laughing with you and not at you.)

if Kerry can make jokes about himself successfully, he ends-up softening that criticism. That weapon against him becomes a laugh rather than a serious complaint.

26. I'm worried about the Dr Phil appearance
I think Phil is very pro Bush, and the only reason he has Kerry on is to appear fair. When he did that show on the war, he showed just how willing he is to manipulate public opinion....that show was completely outrageous. And, in true republican fashion, when he received tons of mail about it, he refused to admit what he had done.

32. Kerry should interview with MAD TV's Dr. Phil & Oprah
I have to say, Kerry has a strong stomach. I couldn't stand being in the same room with Dr. Phil and his arrogant "listen to me-e-e-e-e-e-e" attitude. He thinks he has the anser to every problem there is. Why doesn't he got to Iraq and straighten out those "terrorists."

I heard Stern wants Kerry, but so far Kerry hasn't decided one way or the other. I hope Kerry does it, though he might have to make a disclaimer that while he doesn't agree with everything Stern says, he respects Stern's right to say it.

and why even in a divorced family, Kerry's
daughters are more solid and mature than the Bushtwits.
I saw the interview on Today and an impression
was left that while Bush was around his girls,
Kerry was absent...of course emotional absence
can still be very present even when a person
is physically around.

sniff, sniff.
