She had a glowing smile every time she walked with the Senator. She seemed to love every minute she spent with him.

I watched her straighten the cloth on his casket at the church. Her fingers nimbly worked and she seemed quite in charge of getting it right.

Teddy was praised for caring for his family and all the offspring, friends, acquaintances, etc., and it seems that until Vicki, there was no one there for HIM to help replenish his strength after giving so much of himself away. Vicki took care of HIM, watched over HIM, and put HIS needs first, and I think it was a novel and needed experience for him. He flourished like a sick plant that needed to be fed and watered...she did save him at a time when he had little left to give..

I strongly want this woman to be the next US Senator from MA. I think she can do anything she sets her mind to. Not because she loved him, but because she's intelligent, capable, and seems to care about people the way he did.

and there are plenty of wonderful people who can be senator.

Let her deal with her grief. The last thing we need is to pressure her to be senator.

5. I couldn't help but notice

that she was the happiest when they drove by the Senator's staff on the steps; she loved them and they loved her.

Getting over her grief working with people who loved him, with the dogs running around the offices, successfully and conscientiously doing his unfinished work, would be the best way for her to get over her grief.

Sitting in a dark room writing thank-you cards ain't gonna do it . . .

she is the epitome of class, style, intelligence, care, strength, generosity, and poise. She reminded me of another Kennedy wife, in another time . . .

If Vicki had agreed to be considered for the temporary Senate seat, she would have forfeited the chance to run for Mass Senator. I hope she's thinking about it.

but why is there this push here to keep some sort of a monarchy-like thing going? MA will get a new, great Dem senator who will have some big shoes to fill...I'm not pushing for it to be a Kennedy.

7. How many families do you know that make a point of teaching

all of their children the importance of public service? Not necessarily via politics, but that is something that has become somewhat of a family tradition. This is one way that this wealthy family finds purpose in its lives. It is because they have the luxury of not having to struggle just to meet their fiscal needs that they are able to devote themselves to public service of all kinds. Even when that includes paid political positions (such as Senator or Congressman), the salary they could make elsewhere would probably be much greater. And thus they would not have the ordinary temptation of accepting lobbyists money or setting themselves up for future lucrative careers.

I really don't know any families who are willing to give so much back to thier community and nation. Especially in light of what that has cost them already.

15. In total agreement. I think many people here forget who owns this seat: the people of Massachusetts.

I have nothing against her. She seems a good woman, though I have no clue where she stands personally on the issues I care about. But the idea that the seat belongs to the Kennedys is starting to grate me the wrong way.

9. Ethel fixing the cloth was one of my favorite moments.....

.... it was hung on one side and, about half way through the ceremony, she stepped into the aisle and straightened it. (A different time than what you're referring to.)

In fact, I liked the scene of she and Vicki and Ted's sister (gah, I can't remember her name) were laying the cloth over the casket.

.... is the sister you're thinking of .... the last of the Kennedy siblings.

My mother noticed the cloth hung on the side .... and was so fixated on it she could hardly focus .... "why cant they fix that!!!" she kept saying.

14. Ethel did it when the congregation was allowed to sit down

the good Catholic Ethel knew not to do it when the opening prayers were being read. As soon as everyone was seated to hear the first reading before the gospel, Ethel quickly got out of the pew and straightened the cover (pall?)on the casket so that it hung straight.

was especially fitting that she took the time to make it perfect for the man who was a surrogate father to her many children. He was a very young man, all of 36, when he stepped into that role, and he never faltered. God bless them both.

Let her grieve in her own way. There are plenty of good liberals in MA that want a chance to run for the Senate. It's been 25 years since there was an open Senate seat from MA.
