1. aaach...just saw this; not a very good portent
WTF is WRONG with this idiot?

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=840349&mesg_id=840349

I've just read the first few responses, and they're not positive, to say the least

the dems REALLY better get wise, and speak with one voice about that 87 billion vote

it's a HOME RUN for them, and one that can be dealt with CONCISELY, which is unusual for most of the BS dealt out by the pugs, which most often takes a much more complicated explanation for their simply-worded LIES and distortions

2. that why I didn't watch it.
Its pretty clear Daschle is in a nasty fight, and he is being forced in a corner on that issue.

4. Then he should step down as minority leader....
Plain and simple. If he can't represent the positions of our presidetntial candidates and defend them thusly, then he should step down as minority leader and worry about running his race.

8. I won't argue with that
But why does he still have support from the other Senators? He won't step down unless he loses that support.

I would say that both Frist and Hastert are not what I would call moderate. So we should have similar leadership. I like Pelosi.

9. if Kerry wins, I'll be very surprised if he doesn't put his own man in
who that would be, I have no idea

Daschle is GONE, either way, though

10. I think you misunderstand what the Senate leaders actually do ...
and who they respond to.

They are not about public relations. They are about managing the votes in their respective houses for their respective parties. Without a majority, Daschle has managed to block many Bush initiatives. Witness how hated he is by the far right.

He has thwarted Bush in ANWR. He has thwarted him on psycho judicial appointments. He has thwarted him on the overtime rules.

He does the best he can with what he has.

The leader of the Democrats in the Senate is not about pleasing Democratic activists. It is about legislative mechanics. And right now, he is in a very tight race and is trying to keep his seat. Every Democratic Senator understands that totally. John Kerry understands that totally as does John Edwards.

11. he also is a very visible national figure, and should be a man
of public influence

that's why Bush picked Frist

he's been a disaster on the attributes you mentioned, but Bush thought he'd be less of a jackass re: public presentability

there are always fixers behind the scenes

you think Hastert has any power at all in the house?

12. otoh ...
Daschle has been quite skilled in doing what he is supposed to do. Maybe the very best one.

The "public face" aspect is tertiary even though it is all we see, as citizens. The Democratic Senators elect him for a reason and I suspect that reason is that he is very good at managing the Democratic legislative response and program.

13. could be....I don't know the intricacies of that......
all I know is that he is NOT the face I want to see on national TV, speaking in a role comparable to Frist

who does DeLay's job in the Senate?

Daschle can be the behind the scenes guy, but he's GOT to stop undermining Kerry with statements like he made on MTP....that's for SURE

3. His best point

"Those values are as important to me as my arm,'' Mr. Daschle said, noting that he, and not Mr. Thune, had served in the military. "There's only one veteran running here.""

5. I read that quote. couldn't agree more, but the consensus
in that thread I linked is that he's screwing Kerry in order to save his own hide

somebody said that his lack of support on the 87 billion vote will be turned immediately into a pug attack ad

sure sounds like it could

15. i thought he responded well when thune essentially called him a traitor
it was a disgusting low blow and serves to illustrate just what daschle is fighting against in SD.

and i agree with pepper belly, daschle has been effective in stopping much of the damage the busheviks hoped to perpetrate on the republic.
