9. They'll just stand on American traditions of free enterprise and individualism |
|
They don't need an answer because they deny there's any problem.
As long as Democrats are afraid to take on American tradition, the pukes have a pretty good argument stopper. "Personal responsibility has always been the American Way; it was good enough for the founders and the men who wrote our Constitution yadda yada yadda..." Next thing you know they're telling the TV audience about how rugged American individuals stopped collectivist Nazis from taking over the world in 1945, armed with their own individual muskets from home and making their own lead shot. It would be the crime of the century to betray those good men by desecrating the liberty they secured for us, by giving in to Soshulisst Medicine.
But the real obstacle we face is that our own Democratic politicians are still more afraid of offending insurance and pharmaceutical and hospital corporations than they are of fucking us over.
When enough people have experienced the loss of their medical and economic security through the rot of our for-profit system, then neither the Republican mythology of our twelve-foot-tall ancestors nor the clout of the corporate medicine complex will stand in the way of real change. We're probably not there yet though.

Republicans have a formidable record at winning name-calling contests.
We have to convince people at some point that it's time to create new and better traditions. Health care isn't the only problem where overcoming the inertia of AMerican Traditions will be critical to gaining real improvement. There are also environmental issues where American Traditions of property rights obstruct progress. There's the issue of job creation where the American Tradition of letting capital go wherever and do whatever the hell it pleases is draining our economy of jobs. In healthcare we can counter with the history of wiping out diseases like smallpox and polio. That was a public effort and it took government to organize it. We can build on examples like that and expand them into new traditions. Leaving small pox and polio alone and letting everyone face them on their own individual initiative would have meant thousands of people being killed and disabled in each generation. We departed from tradition there and the result was a benefit to everyone. We can do the same for health care in general.
