The mood and discourse (or what passes for discourse) in this country is too volatile right now to let such disrespect pass without some kind of censure. Otherwise, I'm afraid such boorishness will only escalate into God-knows-what. You open the door a crack and the next thing you know, it's wide open.
I'm glad someone else thought of the Sumner caning.
