Rep. Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.) starts off with an early advantage in next year’s Tennessee gubernatorial primary, according to a poll of Republican primary voters that his campaign commissioned which was obtained by POLITICO.
The July Tarrance Group survey shows the eight-term congressman leading the crowded Republican field, boosted by strong name recognition in his home base in eastern Tennessee. He receives 22 percent of the Republican primary vote, leading lieutenant governor Ron Ramsey who tallies 15 percent.
In third place is Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons with 14 percent, with Knoxville mayor Bill Haslam in fourth place with 12 percent.
Wamp’s pollster Ed Goeas writes that the relatively strong economic environment in eastern Tennessee, compared to the rest of the state, gives Wamp a tailor-made message in the primary.
“Zach Wamp’s record of past success and his message of jobs, economic development, and building a better Tennessee, combined with his higher name recognition among voters and strong ballot performance establish him as the frontrunner in the race,” pollster Ed Goeas wrote in a memo to the campaign.
That said, there’s a long way to go until 2010, and once Wamp’s challengers start spending money and raising their statewide profiles, the numbers will surely shift. Haslam, in particular, has a reputation as a strong fundraiser and certainly is poised to pose a serious challenge to Wamp.
