August Was Not So Bad for the White House
August Was Not So Bad for the White House

Charles Franklin looks at the polling data and sees a very different picture of how the August town hall meetings impacted the Obama administration's health care reform efforts.

"A bump here and a drop there, and the precise estimates of support and opposition differ by as much as 2 points up or down. But the big picture is that opposition ramped up significantly through June or July but has recently slowed or stopped. Support fell less precipitously but has been working back up for a month (despite or perhaps because of the circus coverage in August.)"

1. No, the dog didn't die, but "not so bad" ain't exactly something to brag about.
We need to do a lot better than "not so bad".

2. I didn't take much of the polling during that time period that serious

I figured that much of what we saw and/or heard during that time period was being hyped and trumpeted to try to kill HCR and/or hurt President Obama. And the corporate media whores simply couldn't resist covering all of the crazies at the Town Hall meeting. Despite all of that looniness, support didn't change much even as the RW was busy trying to create the reality that it was. However, the RW took it one step too far and started to create an uproar over President Obama's "indoctrination" school speech and then acted disrespectfully at the following HCR speech, which helped pave the way for President Obama and the Democrats to re-energize everybody for what will be the final push to get HCR done- with OR without Republican support.

5. Just because the media proclaims something, doesn't make it so.
