Obama: Copenhagen-bound for IOC
Obama: Copenhagen-bound for IOC
Posted September 28, 2009 7:15 AM

by Mark Silva

President Barack Obama, who initially planned to let First Lady Michelle Obama represent the United States in Copenhagen this week, when the International Olympic Committee chooses a site for the 2016 summer games, plans to travel there too.

The White House, which earlier had announced that an advance team was headed to Copenhagen to prepare for a possible presidential trip to Copenhagen, confirmed this morning that Obama will travel Thursday night. The IOC meets Friday.

A senior administration official told the Tribune Washington Bureau this morning that Obama will travel to Copenhagen Thursday night, and return following the Friday meeting.

Promoters of Chicago's bid for the 2016 games have pressed the president to take the United States' case personally.

4. This is a sign that there is a damned good chance Chicago will get it.
Speaking as a fan of several Chicago sports teams, it would be nice to have the home team (USA) win a few in a Chicago venue.

10. When "the Olympic Ideal" meets "the Chicago Way," I cringe at the outcome.
We may believe in peace, but more importantly Daley and his buddies believe in a piece of the action.

11. there will be plenty of action to go around.
and hopefully, like the la games, it will leave a legacy of money for youth sports that la has not even been able to spend. their endowment has actually grown since the games, all the while providing for kids sports programs.

seriously, what does that mean- a piece of the action? the labor unions are in favor of it because it will mean a lot of construction jobs. does that count? is there something wrong with that? people will build things they wouldn't build otherwise. people will invest in things that they wouldn't invest in otherwise. is that a piece of the action? people will get affordable housing after the games are gone. is that a piece of the action?

seriously, cynicism is a cancer.

With everything else that's going on here and abroad the president deems it so important to bring the Olympics to Chicago that he has to go in person????

He's needed HERE, Goddamit. What a waste of time and resources.
Michelle could easily have done the job, and she's just as popular overseas as he is.

I'm mad as hell about this, and I bet the Reich wingers will be all over it.

And what if he doesn't get it for Chicago?

Big fail.

Oh wait, your complaints about wasting fuel were just a rationalization for your reflexive Obama hatred? Never mind then.

I bet you're still angry about his trip to Broadway.

25. Perhaps you're
confusing this President with the last one. You see, this one is quite different.

He can actually walk and chew gum at the same time.

I understand this was your daily chance to take a cheap shot at him but honestly, as with all your other cheap shots, it's pure BS.

How dare he want the United States to host the Olympic games. How dare he want to create some excitement for those American athletes who will be competing to actually compete in front of the home country fans.

Yeah, he's a horrible fucking man that Obama.

43. The President can conduct a war from Air Force One if necessary
Thus I think he should have no problem making some calls to Senators while he's on his way to Copenhagen just as he would if he were sitting in the Oval Office. He can also hold meetings on the plane by having the people he needs to meet with fly with him. They have this process down to a science and thus the President is still able to tend to domestic business even if he is out of the country.

47. President Obama is capable of multitasking, something the last President seemed
to not be able to do. I'm sure that he would do the same thing even if it was another American city. There won't be anything going on in congress on a Friday. He can do anything from Air Force 1 that is necessary to do his job.

He'll be totally clueless as to what's going on anywhere else. If only we had some sort of network that would let people send and receive information all over the world, even instantly.

41. Do you remember his first trip on Air Force One?
He traveled to VA for the Democrat's annual retreat. Length of trip? All of 37 minutes. I guess driving wouldn't have been as much fun. I wonder what was the carbon footprint on that jaunt. Or the flight to Chicago to take Michelle out on Valentine's day and to play basketball with his buddies. The following Tuesday was when he signed the stimulus bill. Did he read it? Nahhhh, what for?

44. The people of Chicago can't afford the Olympics
Every Olympic game has resulted in massive losses for the host city, with one notable exception, the Salt Lake Winter games and that's because LDS kicked in lost of money on behalf of Romney.
