FARK!!! Will someone please step forward and say these simple words?
Edited on Fri Oct-02-09 10:31 AM by demwing
"The public option is ALIVE in the Senate. Five bills have come out of conference. Four of those bills contain a public option. Only one (the Senate Finance Committee bill) does not. The Senate Democrats OVERWHELMINGLY SUPPORT a public option."

The same logic applies to mandates, in the opposite. Only the Finance Committee is pushing mandates.

Why is it SO god damned hard to get this concept? A three year old can understand that 4 is more than 1, why are the media talking heads less intelligent than a three year old?

Furthermore, why is it so bloody difficult to get on board with the fact that there is NO UNIFIED SENATE BILL at this time? Of the five bills, none are final, and none spell the beginning or the end of anything permanent relating to health care reform!

Can SOMEONE get on TV and say this? When the mouthpieces start proclaiming X or Y as dead, can someone STOP THEM?

Finally, if the qualifications for being a well paid political commentator are so low, where the fuck can I get a job application?

Edited to correct my apoplectic typing...

3. Yes, so can we stop posting its obituary here?
Its still possible, and if there's nothing most of us can do at least hoping for the best is better than conceding while the fight's still on.

6. So many factual errors it is not funny.
Edited on Fri Oct-02-09 11:14 AM by Mass
1/ All bills push mandates. http://www.kff.org/healthreform/upload/healthreform_sbs_full.pdf All, however, have a big hole for the middle class, rather than trying to solve the question of affordability.

2/ The Senate finance committee bill is not yet out of committee. It may be on Monday, but, as of today, it is not.

But, of course, I would agree the public option is not dead. However, it probably would be easier if some Democrats were on TV fighting for it and refusing the premise it takes 60 votes to get it.

11. Two errors, both (IMO) minor, but errors they are
First though, the Baucus bill might as well be out of committee. We're probably talking hours here

As for mandates, what I meant (and should have written), was "Private Insurance Mandates." Since the other bills offer public options, there is no private insurance mandate. A mandate with a PO is not (IMO) too controversial. A mandate without a PO is a mandate for corporate servitude. Nonetheless, you were right to call that out. The way I worded it was wrong, and I appreciate the correction. I was livid when I typed it up, and should have taken a deep breath first. :)

All that being said, I fully stand by the context of what I wrote, with minor content corrections as you indicated. Every Dem I see on TV - other than Howard Dean - accepts the meme that the PO is dead in the Senate. When ever a talking head says "Well how do you feel now that the PO is dead?" You don't hear "The PO is alive in the Senate," with explanation. You hear stammering and "Lets not forget the real issue here-blahbady blah blah"

If there are others saying it's alive and kicking, please call them out here, and I suggest every one write them a letter of thanks.

8. Hear, hear! Happy to rec this.
It's far from over. The committee vote was expected. Schumer laid all this out for us last week. He's known we'd prolly lose in the committee and he laid out the scenario very nicely and succinctly.

10. There will be a public option.
Edited on Fri Oct-02-09 11:47 AM by Ikonoklast
Baucus is out of any scenario of controlling the issue, now. He has shown his masters that he tried, really, really hard to kill any meaningful reform, and quietly cash their checks.

There will be a public option.

They are disingenuous, pretentious assholes who see this as an opportunity to push the idea that health care reform is doomed.
