New York Times: Obama rooting for Bloomberg, shuns Democratic opponent in race for NYC mayor
Edited on Wed Oct-07-09 07:50 AM by rmp yellow
NYT:
Since Mr. Obama’s election, Mr. Thompson, the city’s comptroller, has found his attempts to piggyback on Mr. Obama’s popularity thoroughly drowned out by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, who has tethered himself to the new president.

Mr. Bloomberg has met with the president four times since his inauguration, held public events with four of his cabinet members, and heaped praise on the new administration at every turn, no matter how mundane the occasion.

“Superb move,” Mr. Bloomberg declared in a press release after Mr. Obama created the obscure-sounding job of chief performance officer at the White House.

On Tuesday, he accepted the endorsement of a close Obama ally, John D. Podesta, who ran Mr. Obama’s transition team last fall. The mayor’s conspicuous courtship of the president and his allies has deprived Mr. Thompson of a natural advantage in an election in which he enjoys painfully few of them. He trails Mr. Bloomberg in name recognition, money, endorsements and, now, love from the nation’s top Democrat.

3. I don't have much problem with this. Obama trascends party lines
He ran as a man who would unite the nation. And Bloomberg is a moderate. It doesn't hurt to side with this important bloc of the nation.

18. I have a big problem with this
Bloomberg is running for a third term after overturning the will of the people who voted in term limits. He has no business running again.

That's not even starting to go into the fact that Bloomberg is a rancid piece of shit and a lousy mayor. He may not have Guiliani's sneering public persona but as far as the NYPD are concerned not a damn thing has changed.

5. Some wingnuts have pretty high approval in their states

Should we support them because of this fact? Or should we support Olymbia Snowe and Susan Collins in Maine, speaking of other moderates?

8. I didn't say I think the Prez should support him. I think the Prez should butt out, actually.
But Bloomberg's approval ratings are high.

7. That's the whole point. Bloomberg's going to win. Obama isn't going to lose any political capital
over this race.

17. Good, then it wasn't just me
I was looking hard for that, and didn't see it.

If anything, I see Bloomberg kissing up to the president.

15. You suck at headline writing.

Which is even worse than this POS whiny article that has no stated facts or sources to back up its allegations. How is Obama meeting with Bloomberg "embracing" the guy? Given the size of NYC, I don't see a meeting between them is any different than Obama meeting with a governor. If Obama did get involved, the NY Times would predictably run an article slamming him for meddling needlessly in local affairs.
