27. Then go around and give an R to any thread that has "less than 0"
like this one.

Regardless of the topic. Since there are so many too lazy to express their disagreement with the poster, preferring to cowardly puke a U - I can do the same and give an R. And sometimes I can change it to at least 0.

9. Alright back in the negative baby.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mu_(negative)

"Mu (Japanese/Korean), and Wu (Chinese traditional: 無, simplified: 无 pinyin: wú Jyutping: mou2) is a word which has been roughly translated as "no", "none", "null", "without", "no meaning". While used in Japanese and Chinese mainly as a prefix to imply the absence of something (e.g., 無線/无线 musen/wúxiàn for "wireless"), in English it is more famously used as a response to certain koans and other questions in Zen Buddhism, intending to indicate that the question itself was wrong.

The Mu koan is as follows: A monk asked Zhaozhou, a Chinese Zen master (known as Jōshū in Japanese): "Has a dog Buddha-nature or not?", Zhaozhou answered: "Wú" (in Japanese, Mu).

Some earlier Buddhist thinkers had maintained that creatures such as dogs did have the Buddha-nature; others, that they did not. Therefore, to answer "no" is to deny their wisdom, whereas to say "yes" would appear to blindly follow their teachings. Zhaozhou's answer has subsequently been interpreted to mean that all such categorical thinking is in fact a delusion. In other words, yes and no are both right and wrong. This Koan is traditionally used by students of the Rinzai school of Zen as their initiation into Zen study."

31. In light of the 2000 election when "real progressives" put Bush in office
excuse us on a DEMOCRATIC website for not liking it when our DEMOCRATIC president is compared to Bush, called a corporate whore, etc. If you want to have a legitimate policy disagreement with Obama, fine. But don't expect us to tolerate sewing of division within the left via hyperbolic nasty characterizations of our president. I don't want another 2000 in 2012 (or 2010 for that matter).

19. Intellectually, it can be compared to the tea baggers and the birthers
the one difference is that the tea baggers and the birthers are really stupid, while the unrecs are not stupid, but choose to bury their collective heads in the sand lest their universe come crashing down on them.

21. Actually, I think some people secretly like it. It allows them to delude themselves into thinking
Edited on Wed Oct-07-09 08:10 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
that whatever point they are making is so wonderful that everyone else is simply too stupid to understand. It allows them declare themselves martyrs and victims of some shadowy and evil force rather than admit that *maybe* their original post wasn't as great as they thought it was.

Some good posts get unrecommended. Some bad posts are unrecommended too. Now the authors of bad posts can group themselves in with the authors of the good posts and pretend that they are one and the same--victimized for being too brilliant in their own time.

Speaking of avoiding blame: How many times have you seen people stomp their feet and declare everyone else an idiot for unrecommending their post while simultaneously declaring themselves martyrs on the altar of truth? It couldn't possibly be that their OP is bad, it just couldn't!

23. Ignoring a post is a far stronger statement.
Of course, that takes some self control.

And word salad for some is a fine meal for another.

But you know ..... if you think strongly that an OP is worthless, why not man up and say so? Then at least you would be a public dick, not a secret, anonymous dick.

By the way, your line spacing needs adjustment. It was easy to see through the white space to what was behind it. :)

24. Yep, one man's great post is another man's crappy post. This is why the Greatest Page is decided
Edited on Wed Oct-07-09 10:23 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
taking ALL votes into account. See how that works out?

I'm not shy about commenting on the quality of OPs. A OP perceived as poor will get a comment and an unrec. But the hysteria about a simple feature on a message board is irritating beyond belief. If the unrec function deleted a thread or buried a thread...ok, I can see why people would have an issue with that. It doesn't. It keeps it off the Greatest Page.

Also, BEFORE unrec existed, as people would kick their own posts again and again, they'd often say something along the lines of "Oh, I guess nobody wants to admit the TRUTH!!!111" and follow that up with more martyrdom. Unrec is just the latest target for those who can't accept that people don't like their OPs.

Edited on Wed Oct-07-09 11:21 PM by IndianaGreen
I wonder how long will you guys go on after the war drags out past the midterms, with nothing to show for but newly dug graves in our national cemeteries.

Obama could have chosen to be JFK, by deciding to cut our losses in Afghanistan and bringing the troops home. By putting the "peace option" off the table, Obama has chosen to follow the path of LBJ and the rest of the "best and the brightest" that gave us 58,193 dead GIs.

28. That's actually very easy to explain .....
...... unpopular posts or posts that can in any remote way be seen as critical of Obama get swarmed with unrecs. Those are not about bad OPs. Those are about idolatry or fan club antics.

As we "celebrate" the start of our ninth year in Afghanistan, there were many threads about that. Every one tat I observed got slammed with unrecs ...... some within seconds of being posted.

That's just today's example.

34. I normally only unrec when the topic is not political.
Or if the OP is ridiculous/obvious flamebait. If I don't care for the topic, I just hide the thread so I don't have to look at it.

But yeah, I don't get why so many people get so wee-wee'd up (to borrow a phrase) about the unrec feature. One of my former coaches used to say "Don't like the officiating? Score more points." Don't like unrec? Write better OPs.
