Obama deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. He earned it. His campaign united people of all races, cultures, and ethnicities, not only here but in many parts of the world. He has normalized relations with Russia, has re-initiated the Middle East Peace Process, has reached out to Africa, is leading us out of Iraq, has condemned torture in no uncertain terms, is ending the War on Terror and is replacing it with a far more legal and moral approach to terrorism, has given hope to people worldwide, has effectively used peaceful means with Iran and North Korea to establish opportunities for talking, has helped motivate pro-democracy forces in Iran, has taken steps to make it clear to Chavez and Castro that we are not a threat, is trying to close Guantanamo, and is working with other leaders around the world to address the global economic crisis. He's done all this in a short time, and though there are never any guarantees, if one considers his accomplishments to date, it's easy to imagine that we will have a safer and more civilized world by the time even his first term ends. The Nobel Prize Committee was right to acknowledge him in this way, and he's right to look upon the award as a call to action. I have some disagreements with Obama on his domestic policy, but as a peacemaker, he's clearly conducted himself well even as he struggles with Afghanistan. It's hard for me to understand why some liberals, not particularly in this forum, would question him getting the award. He's done so much in so little time that it's clear he really is a peacemaker. Thank you Obama!
