I just don't believe this is happening here
There are many around on DU that seem to believe that if you don't agree with everything that President Obama says, does, or wins that you should just leave, or ask "why are you here?", or that I am a hater.

These people make DU sound like the left version of freeperville.

Some on here are beginning to sound like the Fux Noise channel viewers who want to come here to feel good about their own beliefs and not hear another side of the story from those that care about the same things. Some around here want an echo chamber, and not a real debate on issues or merits.

I never really thought I would hear the words "if you don't agree with me, why don't you leave" on DU. I also don't believe that some around here have begun using right-wing tactics and when they can't win an argument based on facts they attack the person and not the argument.

It's sad day at DU, a very sad day indeed.

why is it interesting to me that on the same day Michelle Malkin and Glenn Beck are suggesting he "throw it back", this poster comes up with that same brilliant idea and then cries crocodile tears when we don't wholeheartedly support him/her?

against anyone without a less than reverend attitude towards The Leader. It does smack of what the rightwingers did to demonize the Republican moderates and the real conservatives like Barry Goldwater.

Oh My God -- It's SHOCKING!

Yeah, if you can't figure out why he's gotten his prize, you need more than an attitude adjustment, you need a brain overhaul. And to be told this is Democratic underground with a Big D for the Democratic Party. If you can't be proud today - get the fuck out of here.

No one can make you "leave" except the mod who TSes you.

Given that, my view is that these posts are made because those who make them are upset with people disagreeing with them and probably think it was done rudely. There's no power in anyone's response to make anyone leave unless they so choose.

LoZoccolo used that term here again regarding suicide:

34. I agree that one poster is unclassy and it's uncalled for
but it certainly is an extreme exception to the general rule. I would also posit that it seems this poster was happy they had stumbled upon that phrase and were seeking to use it as often as they could and not necessarily wanting people to off themselves if they disagreed with the Nobel thing.

But that's just my opinion based on the poster's history.

You know exactly what to expect here from 80% of the people who are still proud to support Obama - especially on a day when there has been global good will shown to the USA and the President.

It's really unfortunate that you don't understand that.

Just ignore it, post your opposition, and be active..but don't be SHOCKED if there is some over extended joy today.

questioning. They despise SNL for a comedy sketch, that are attacking Frank Rich for not agreeing. They attacked Krugman and mocked his Nobel Prize BTW, But they may like him again. They despise RFK Jr. and call him a loon despite all his work on the environment( Presumably they haven't forgotten his backing Hillary)Just yesterday they thought it was great idea to "punish" anyone living in a red state. I was told that if you didn't like the opt out "I should just move". Reality and financial consequences mean nothing to some. and yet again, some are told to "leave DU.". This isn't new. But it is sad.

28. I like President Obama, the part I don't get is .........
how people get their panties in a wad because someone believes another person to be more deserving of the prize.

I hope he lives up to the commitment of the prize, but some fail to realize that if the US was occupied by a hostile force and the leader of the invading country was awarded a prize for peace that we would be screaming at the top of our lungs.

I mean seriously, we are quite possibly getting for a ramp up in Afghanistan and have yet to end the Bush debacle in Iraq and rattling sabers over Iran.

I understand that both wars are fluid situations, but nothing has been done in those wars to promote a peace process.

True, some have been awarded the prize in the middle of the process, but President Obama hasn't even begun to truly start the progress.

he has done many things that I love and things that I believe he hasn't gone far enough in doing. We jumped up and down on the right during the Bush years because no one from his own party questioned him. There's a difference between loyalty and blind loyalty. I am loyal to my President and my country, but I am not going to be blind about it.

End the Iraq war, end Afghanistan, and close gitmo and will consider that a success for a Peace prize.

48. It is when you can't admit that there are people more deserving
and before you can say who, here's one answer.

Wei Jingsheng (Chinese: 魏京生; Pinyin:Wèi Jīngshēng; born May 20, 1950) is an activist in the Chinese democracy movement, most prominent for authoring the document Fifth Modernization on the "Democracy Wall" in Beijing in 1978.
He had joined the Red Guards as a sixteen-year-old student during the Cultural Revolution. When Deng Xiaoping came to power and repudiated the Cultural Revolution, Wei Jingsheng, then a twenty-eight-year-old electrician in Beijing's Zoo, attacked the dictatorship of the Communist Party of China, becoming one of the first few daring to denounce Deng and his will to maintain a dictatorship in China. Wei's and others' public dissent worried Deng who was anxious to consolidate his power. Apart from the Fifth Modernization ("第五个现代化") authorship, Wei Jingsheng is known for his editorial work in a short-lived magazine Exploration (《探索》 ;) in 1979.

Wei Jingsheng was arrested March 29, 1979 for "Passing military secrets", and was condemned to 15 years of prison.<1> He had also published a letter under his name in March 1979 denouncing the inhuman conditions of the Chinese Qincheng Prison, where the 10th Panchen Lama was imprisoned.<2> However, a major part of Wei's essay came from other anonymous authors with personal experiences involving Qincheng. Those parts were published by Wei without their consent. Mary Holzman declared that Wei completed his research and wrote his essay of investigative journalism within a week,<3> which makes it highly doubtful that Wei wrote the essay himself, as he simply did not have the factual knowledge present in the text.

Although they could not bring any formal charges against him for his attacks on the Communist system, the government exaggerated Wei's correspondence with foreigners about the Chinese-Vietnamese War and charged him with treason. He stayed in prison until 14 September 1993, when he was released because the PRC wanted to show their new openness before the International Olympic Committee. The Olympics were a huge event for Chinese nationalism and when they lost their bid to Sydney, Australia, the country was deflated. Wei, once again looked at as a scapegoat, was thrown in jail once more after China lost the Olympic bid. Charged with plotting against the state he was to remain in jail until November 16, 1997, when he was released for "medical reasons" and promptly deported to the United States. He was sent to the United States due to international pressure, especially the request by then US President Bill Clinton.

Dissidents who are widely known in the West, such as Wei Jingsheng, Fang Lizhi, and Wang Dan are typically deported when the Chinese government is really under pressure. Although Chinese criminal law does not contain any provisions for exiling citizens, it is carried out informally by giving these well known dissidents a severe jail sentence and subsequently granting medical parole before sending them out in exile.

In 1996, Wei Jingsheng was awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. He is a winner of numerous other human rights and democracy awards, including the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award in 1996, the National Endowment for Democracy Award in 1997, the Olof Palme Memorial Prize in 1994, and the International Activist Award by the Gleitsman Foundation, etc. In 2008, he was chosen as one of the 15 Champions of World Democracy by the Europe-based magazine A Different View.<4> He has been praised in numerous places with titles such as "Father of Chinese Democracy" and "Nelson Mandela of China". Thousands of entries about him can be found on the Internet in various languages.

Besides the well publicized essay he wrote in 1978, the Fifth Modernization, he is the author of "Courage to Stand Alone -- letters from Prison and Other Writings", which compiles his articles written initially on toilet paper in jail. He has weekly commentary on Radio Free Asia, and many other news media.

From his prison, Wei Jingsheng wrote to Deng Xiaoping many letters that were smuggled out secretly and published.<5> Hence, in 1992, he wrote a long letter about Tibet, which questioned the suzerainty of the Qing Dynasty over Tibet. He believed Tibet should become a part of India.<6>

This many could very well end up being the MLK of China.

76. FYI From the DU About Us page:
About Democratic Underground, LLC

Democratic Underground (DU) was founded on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2001, to protest the illegitimate presidency of George W. Bush and to provide a resource for the exchange and dissemination of liberal and progressive ideas. Since then, DU has become one of the premier left-wing websites on the Internet, publishing original content six days a week, and hosting one of the Web's most active left-wing discussion boards.

We welcome Democrats of all stripes, along with other progressives who will work with us to achieve our shared goals. While the vast majority of our visitors are Democrats, this web site is not affiliated with the Democratic Party, nor do we claim to speak for the party as a whole.

Democratic Underground would not be possible without the participation of like-minded individuals from across the country and, indeed, from around the world. The content for the site is provided by people who feel that their views are not represented by the conservative "mainstream" media in the U.S. We accept article submissions from those on the left who wish to write, so that DU represents a variety of progressive viewpoints. We have a particular appreciation for satire and humor.

Visitors may also participate in our discussion forums, which have become one of the most popular places on the Web for members of the political left to share ideas and discuss the issues.

This website exists so our members and guests are assured that there are many others across the country who share their outrage at the unilateral, arrogant, and extreme right-wing approach taken by George W. Bush and his team, the conservative Republicans in Congress, and the five conservative partisans on the Supreme Court. We address the right in harsh terms, and we fully intend to make the word "conservative" absolutely radioactive. In that spirit, DU has already gained countrywide notoriety as the originator of the weekly Top Ten Conservative Idiots list, which is published (almost) every Monday.

Democratic Underground gets lots of visitors and we rely mostly on donations to pay our expenses. We therefore invite you to make a contribution to our efforts in whatever amount you can afford. Democratic Underground is legally a for-profit organization, therefore, you won't get a tax deduction for your contribution. However, you will get the satisfaction of knowing that as long as there are conservative idiots, Democratic Underground will be here to hold them accountable (and maybe even make fun of them).

32. What you call "debate" isn't one.
Yes, the few people who blindly support Obama are annoying, but on the other hand, the people that do nothing but bash him -- even when he does something positive -- are even more annoying. It's these people that whine about how the (extremely rare) positive posts about Obama are blinding us to his alleged failures.

We finally have a Democratic president after eight horrible years. No, I don't think he's been doing a perfect job, but I am willing to give him a fair shake. And anybody out there who believes eight years of screw-ups can be fixed in nine months is too goddamn stupid in the first place.

on most issues. There are often times where I vocally support Obama.

39. I never thought a big percentage of GDP posts would be devoted
to trumpeting stale anti-Obama talking points gleaned from such "reliable sources" as Politico, Drudge, Worldnut Daily, and any number of skanky-ass Murdoch rags. Doesn't really matter, just so long as it's critical of the President, it's paraded through here in triumph and given a hearty huzzah by the usual Eeyore contingent before getting its well-deserved unrecs. If you think such tripe constitutes "a real debate on issues and merits" I want some of what you're smoking.

So I guess we both learn something every day.

61. It is WORSE than freeperville
If you read the rules of Free Republic, they are a board about principles, primarily conservatism. People are free to support the Constitution party, the Libertarian party and whatnot.

This board is not about principles, the rules say you must support the Democratic Party. You can go through the archives to see that those rules have been enforced, especially people who supported Nader, the Greens and whatnot. It is not about a movement, or an ideology, or a set of principles here, you have to go to Free Republic to get that (although an admittedly warped ideology on most things). Here you have to support whatever hack the DLC Blue Dog hacks put up.

62. It's not that I don't support the Democratic movement or party for that matter ............
I support true universal health-care, I support a greener planet, I support most closing Gitmo, I support ending the Iraq war - but none of these things have yet to actually happen and no one in the administration have an actionable plan that they have even begun to put into practice.

President Obama asked us to hold him to higher standard, and now people are getting upset when I am only doing what he asked - and that is hold my elected officials responsible for the promises that they made.

This has been true here since this board started, and pretty much everywhere else since humans first started talking. If you cannot accept criticism: don't speak.

68. Can somebody explain why what he wrote in the other thread was so bad.
I am very happy to see president Obama got the Nobel Price, but the poster was presenting a way for Obama to deal with this price that was just different (not endorsing the view here. Just saying I do not see the insult). He was not attacking him. He was not saying he was not deserving it. He was just proposing a strategy. If we cannot read an alternate point of view without yelling murder, may be there is s

Now, given the way the RW is reacting, I can understand some people are a little bit raw, but the reaction seems a little bit extreme, except if there is an history I am missing.

So, could somebody explain? Because it is puzzling.

69. It would be the height of arrogant stupidty to go off and lecture the Nobel Committee
who they should have given the award to. What one does when presented with an award of this stature is to gracefully accept the award, donate the money to a worthy cause if you are not in need of money, and continue the good work for which the award was given.

Politically it would be a disaster and a field day for the Mediocracy.

Actually it wasn't that the OP was so bad, there are plenty of OPs here today with world class parade pissing and cloud finding that this OP does not measure up to. No our OP is just upset that people found his theory of correct action so stupid, and so has now gone on to start a meta-thread about his original thread. Perhaps after all the negative comments on this thread our benighted OP will commence a third thread mourning the failure of this one?

Obviously the alert button was being used on me big time today and frankly I could give a flying fuck.

My conscience is clear because I know that I posted the truth that there is NO Peace when you are pushing multiple wars overseas!

The richest irony in the post is the complaint about Faux, while asserting that we should "hear another side", a Faux tactic to elevate the shrieking... to the same level as reasonable discourse.

when criticizing Democratic President. Seems easy to understand.

If you went to Freeperville and praised the prize, you'd expect debate, right?
