Educator declares candidacy for House
Another GOP candidate has emerged to take on U.S. Rep. Jim Marshall in the 8th Congressional District: Ken DeLoach, the dean of students at Central Fellowship Christian Academy in south Bibb County. Like the other challengers, DeLoach, 50, would be making his first run for elected office. He has been at the school for about 10 years and has lived in Houston County for about 15, he said. He said he’s “as ordinary a person as you can get,” and that it’s time to “give the people’s house back to the people.” “I personally feel like the people of District 8 have lost their voice in Congress,” DeLoach said. “And I think it’s time for somebody like myself, who’s never been in politics, to run.” DeLoach joins former Bibb County Republican Party Chairman Paul Rish and Macon businesswoman Angela Hicks in the race, though Hicks hasn’t made a formal announcement and said she’ll step aside if a GOP candidate with more experience decides to challenge Marshall. That’s still a possibility, with qualifying for the November 2010 general election not until next spring. But so far, Middle Georgia Republicans already holding lower elected office haven’t shown an intention to face Marshall, who is in his fourth term and won re-election handily in 2008.

DeLoach said the House of Representatives is supposed to be a place for “the common citizen” to have a voice in government. He said some of Marshall’s votes haven’t matched the district’s character and that it’s time for a change.
