George Bush Sr. Invites Obama To Texas College, Asks Students To Please Not Be Insane
Edited on Wed Oct-14-09 04:16 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
Via Wonkette:

"Insanely old oil monster George H.W. Bush has “pulled a Notre Dame” and invited the terrible President to come speak at Texas A&M University on Friday about the importance of Community Service..."

"George H.W. Bush is allowed to do this because (a) his Presidential Library is on the A&M campus and (b) he owns Texas. But could this be a catastrophe, now that it is controversial for presidents to talk to people in America? “Poppy” understands, though, that a few hundred racists will probably get drunk and protest for “states’ rights” or whatever, and has written an open letter to the students of A&M subtly begging them not to be complete and total assholes. "

G H W Bush's letter:

To My Fellow Members of the Texas A&M Family:

Howdy! As you have probably heard, I have invited the 44th President of the United States of America to come visit the Bush Library and Texas A&M, and President Obama has graciously accepted.

Along with the administration, faculty, and so many of you, I am honored that The President, our President, is taking the time and making the effort to come to College Station on October 16th to talk about an issue that unites all Americans — namely, community service and its vast importance to our continued well-being as a Nation. Our country still faces many tough challenges, and the message that will come out of our Presidential Forum on Service, I hope, is that every American regardless of age has an important part to play in helping us overcome the obstacles to our common progress.

This is not about politics. This is about the importance of service to our communities and our country.

It would be hard to imagine a more deserving college campus to host a Presidential Forum on volunteerism and community service than Texas A&M — which is, after all, a school steeped in a rich tradition of service. That’s why I am so proud to have our Bush Library and Museum and Bush School of Government and Public Service here, and I cannot wait for President Obama to experience the open, decent and welcoming Aggie spirit for himself.

This will be an important national moment, and a moment for Texas A&M to shine in the global spotlight as it always does. I sincerely hope and believe it will serve as a point of Aggie pride for many years to come.

Gig ‘em!

Texas is the last place I would go on an invitation from Poppy Bush. Especially as much as the racist wingnuts in that state hate the President.

Don't blame George for the "Howdy." That's part of the many A&M traditions. Believe it or not, it's a very friendly campus, and "howdys" (at least when I attended in the '80s) rang out left and right as you walked on campus. It was actually quite nice to have the friendly atmosphere. Yes, they're insanely conservative, but some of the most liberal folks I know (including myself) went to A&M. Soooo ... I get the Aggie hate, but know that Aggies have their good side, too!

34. I don't want my President in Texas. Sorry. But I worry about him.
When Obama was campaigning, I remember where the Dallas Police told the Secret Service they had the crowd handled and that was a breach of protocol.

There's just too much hate there in Texas against Obama. I grew up there on and off and have family there, and while I love them, I don't want my President there.

I'm an old guy and I worry about President Obama all of the time.

I grew up with John Kennedy, my hero, being murdered in Dallas and I just don't want Obama in Texas.

Sorry, but that's how I feel.

And I don't trust the Bush Family with my President either.

And President Obama goes, I hope the Secret Service triples its force before he does to protect him.

Never want us to go through that again. I am only in my early thirties but watching that footage made me really understand the pain people went through that day when JFK was murdered. One thing that sticks out to me was Kennedy telling Jackie that they were entering nut country. Gives me chills.
I want Obama to be safe too.

55. a little education for the knee jerk texas haters
Texas A&M is located in the 17th Congressional District of Texas, which is represented by Chet Edwards, a Democrat. While its hardly "Obama country", the notion that Obama should stay out of Texas (or presumably any other state where a majority didn't vote for him) is repulsive. 3.5 million Texans voted for Obama, which in absolute terms, is a 1.5 million more people than voted for Obama in Massachusetts and double the number that voted for him in my home state of Virginia.
