Houston mayor Bill White posted one of the strongest fundraising totals for any Senate candidate this quarter, and he’s not even guaranteed to be on a ballot next year.
White announced he raised $1.1 million over the last three months and supplemented that total with a personal $400,000 donation to the campaign. He ended September with $4.18 million in his campaign account in preparation to run for the Texas Senate seat currently held by Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.)
Hutchison is running for governor against the Republican incumbent Rick Perry, but hasn’t yet decided when to resign her Senate seat. Assuming she vacates the seat, Perry will be tasked with making an interim appointment – with a May 2010 special election to follow.
White is allowed to stockpile cash in anticipation for the special election, even though it hasn’t been called yet. And with his latest fundraising numbers – he’s already raised $6 million for the campaign so far – it shows he’ll have plenty of resources to make a real run at the seat.
