Edited on Wed Oct-14-09 06:13 PM by hughee99
Limbaugh is getting what he wants out of this, publicity... and he'll probably claim that the "real reason" is that the NFL didn't want to be associated with a convicted felon.

The convicted felon, of course, would be George Soros (convicted in France of insider trading) who is also reported to be one of Checketts' other investors.

The WORST case scenario would be that the bid was quiet, no one noticed he was involved, and he actually got stuck as part owner of the Rams. The publicity he really wants he's getting now regardless of the outcome.

22. Regardless of whatever excuse he gives,
he gets to play the man persecuted for his political beliefs to his listeners, and gets a ton of free publicity. That's why it's a win for him.

29. Not all publicity is good
Limbaugh has been rejected by an organization that he loves. And they've given some valid reasons for doing so.

Yes, it might spike his ratings for a week or two, but this is a PR nightmare for him.

32. In what way is this possibly a PR nightmare?
He loves football, the game, he doesn't care what the NFL league office thinks of him. People who didn't like him still don't like him, this didn't change that. People who liked him still like him, and that didn't change either. More people may have heard of him now. If he gets any new listeners as a result, all the better, but now he's given his regular listeners another reason to listen for a little while. I'm sure he's already planning to stir up his next bit of controversy in a few weeks.

How is this even a PR problem?

I maintain that there are A LOT of listeners who think Limbaugh is just some "misundersood guy".

I think this will be a bucket of cold water thrown in their faces.

Outside of his studio, He's hated much more than liked. Limbaugh is a social pariah.

And this news will make people think twice.

33. What Negative publicity?
Because the networks are playing up that they're going to lose the bid because of Limbaugh's "controversial opinions"? The same networks that Limbaugh has been telling his audience every day, for 20 years, are the liberal media out to get him? This is for his audience, people who have heard his show before and maybe haven't been listening lately. If you think he cares what the news outlets say about him, or about what the general public (non-listeners) thinks of him, you haven't been paying attention to his shtick over the last two decades.

he wouldn't do his show. I'll bet he says something EVERY DAY that would piss off NBC's general audience. He doesn't want someone to tune in only to be offended and tune out after 5 minutes. He needs to do the interviews to keep the publicity going, because if he's the only one talking about it, it's not really "free publicity". Yes, he wants to attract new listeners, but I think he's looking to get back some of his listeners who burned out after the election and stopped listening as much.

38. There's no reason to do an hour-long interview with NBC, giving phony, "nice"
answers to many of the questions. He was probably trying to win support for his NFL bid. He failed. And for anyone who saw his interview checked out his show, they were most likely turned off to him AND the Repub. party, since he's the leader.

40. I don't think he was trying to win support for his NFL bid.
The people he needed to convince weren't going to be swayed by an NBC interview, I think he (and everyone else) already knew that.

44. What's he supposed to say "I'm a racist"?
I've met a number of racists, and most of them don't think they're racists. If you ask them, they'll say they're not, and they believe it. They'll have seemingly rational reasons (even if you disagree) for what they believe NOT related to race. It's the plausable deniability of a racist. Limbaugh's no different.

Here's what I'm saying, douchebag though he is, Limbaugh understands his target audience, self-promotion, and the media. When it came out that he was involved with one of the groups, he must have known this would happen (everyone else did). He wasn't going to be able to buy an NFL team (not big on controvercial owners). He can play this to his audience and retain or get back some listeners for a little while until the next controversy.

46. No. He's supposed to give honest answers which would SHOW him to be a racist.
Do you think, if he was asked by someone on Faux, the first word that came to mind when he heard the name "Michelle Obama," he'd say, "garden"??? Do you think he would've said he WAS happy to see the first Black president elected in Barack Obama? NO. He was obviously "tempering" his answers for that audience.

I still don't know how you think it was a GOOD thing for him not to get to buy the team.

47. And this is why we're going back and forth...
It's not "good for him" that he didn't get to buy the team. Whether he got the team or not was irrelevant. He knew, IN ADVANCE, that it would turn out this way. It's "good for him" that he's getting free publicity. People are talking about him, NBC interviewed him, ESPN is talking about him, CNN is talking about this, all places where he doesn't normally get any (or much) press. If he really wanted to be 1/50th of an NFL ownership group, if that were his true goal, I'm sure there are easier (quiet) ways to go about it.

49. You think the NBC interview was because of the NFL bid? I disagree.
I think it was because he feels he's now becoming less relevant than Glenn Beck so he wanted to get out there to get GOOD publicity (which is why he lied in the interview, trying to come off as NOT a racist). But the publicity he got for losing the bid is BAD publicity. I disagree with you that any publicity is good publicity. He's going to turn even more people OFF after they hear about his racist comments.

21. That works out for him, because he wanted the publicity,
not to own 2% of an NFL team. If he wanted the partial ownership, Checketts makes the bid and quietly sells a tiny stake to Limbaugh after the deal is done (IF Checketts even wins the bid, which is a big assumption). He wasn't going to run the Rams, he wasn't going to work in the front office, he was going to buy just enough to say he was an owner. Not only is Limbaugh not trying to keep this under the radar (his best chance of getting the team) he's hyping it on his show.

He WANTS the publicity. He doesn't care what the NFL says about him, and the more they say, the better. The NFL would have been best off to just say that Checketts didn't have the best offer and leave it at that. Instead, he's got Goodell talking about him and he 100% LOVES that Sharpton and Jackson got involved. He won't get the Rams, but he knew that going in.
